I've recently come into possesion of a 16ga. AYA Matador, SS, single trigger shotgun. There seems to be matador I, II, and III?

What markings indicate the exact model, year, etc?

Range of value?

The Matador was made by Aguirre Y Aranzabal In Eibar, Spain.
First imported in 1955 by Firearms International, the Matador was a made for price version of their Model 400 sold prior to 1955 or 1956. Thier was another DT version called the Bolero from 1955 to 1963.

Matador I - Original model, 1955-63. Box lock with SST& AE (some early 10ga Matadors did not have auto ejectors) 10,12,16,20 & .410 gauges. 10ga had 3 1/2"chambers 12,16,20ga guns had 2 3/4" chambers and the .410 had 3" chambers. However, there were some later Matador I guns that had 3" chambers in 12 & 20Ga according to Joe Cauffman.

Matador No.2 - Same as Matador I but with VR. 12 or 20ga only. Some were 3" and some were 2 3/4" only.

Matador No.3A - 12 or 20ga only both in 3". Disc. in 1985.

Markings will not tell the model. There is a date code in the proof marks. Some of these guns were sold by Sears and are so marked. The guns sold by JK Penny and Wards were not marked with their names. Early FIE guns were of higher quality and were marked Firearms International, Alexandria, Virginia.

So it sounds like my 16 ga. was only made as the Matador I between 1955-1963. Thanks!

The exact year is indicated by a date code consisting of a capital letter and (beginning in 1955) a single-digit number, usually with a small * above and between the two figures. Like the G*1 in the upper left part of this pic:

The key to the year codes is here: http://www.9mmlargo.com/year_codes.htm

BTW, the picture is of a 12 gauge Matador 1 made in 1961.

These guns are plain and inexpensive. I bought mine in like-new condition in 1997 for $300, and a like-new one would probably go for no more than $600 now. However, they are good shooters. I can break more sporting clay targets with mine than with any other SxS I've ever shot, in spite of the fact that it is choked Fuller and Fullest. They are also very reliable, although they tend to break the right ejector now and then. (Beats me why just the right one, but left ejectors are a dime a dozen.) Parts are available after-market, but not from AyA.

Just curious I I wanting to fit date of manufacture for my aya matador using my serial # do you guys know where I can find this information. Also, I have seen a 12ga Matador II with markings on the top of the barrels "Firearms International Corp Washington". How does this fit into the above information or are all Matador II marked as this?

For Spanish guns made during that time frame, you can't get the exact date from the serial number, but you can get the year from a proof date code as described in the post above.

Firearms International was an importer. I don't know whether they imported all the Matador II's.

Now that is strange; I have a 28-ga. Matador w/26" barrels.

Matadors were made in 28 gauge. Someone has the serial number to year information. I can't remember who it is.

Are you sure you have a Matador I?
