Gentlemen, and ladies if there are any,
I am a newly registered member of this forum and am very happy to have found it. You will probably get tired of seeing my posts because shotguns have become somewhat of a passion for me only recently, and it appears that I have alot to learn.
My first question is, what if any, are the differences between the Mossberg models 9200 and 5500, and when were they made respectively?
Being new to the forum I hope I am forgiven if this is not the proper place for this post. I thought that the question should be sort of a type of ID question. If the benevolent moderator should choose to move this question to a more apprpriate area of the forum, I would understand and appreciate it.
I appreciate any and all information. Thankyou in advance.

The 5500 was discontinued in 1985 the 5500 mkII was made between 1989-92.

The 9200 was made from 1992-2001.

that's about all I know for sure
I do think that the 5500 was a continuation of the old S&W patents after Howa quit making them for Mossberg but I'm not real clear on it.

You might also want to post in the Opinions forum, some that come here don't go there and vice versa.

The 9200 had a self regulating gas system which allowed the use of 2 3/4" and 3" shells interchangeably. The 5500 MKII was regulated by which barrel was used, 3" or 2 3/4". I had a 5500 MKII with a 28" 2 3/4" chamber and a 24" 3" chamber. It was an OK gun but I got tired of replacing firing pins so sold it. At the same time, I had a S&W 1000 Super which was the first self regulating gas shotgun. These two had different gas systems as I remember but the standard 1000 and 1000 Magnum models may have had similarities to the 5500. A buddy had the 9200 for a brief time but seemed to be different. Mossberg bought the 1000 line from S&W and sold them for a few years. I thought the 1000 was a much better gun for fit, finish, and quality than the 5500 and 9200, it is too bad it was dropped.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the info. It is much appreciated. Why I asked is I've found a nib 5500, 12/2.75"/26", with choke tubes at a local shop for $250. They got it from another shop that went out of business and really want rid of it. I've heard that the 9200 wasn't a bad gun, just a Mossberg, if you know what I mean. Had no info on the 5500 to compare it.

Thanks again.
