Saw this on Ebay and thought someone might be interested.

Nice tactical stocking stuffer.

I've seen them go for a lot more.

Yes, very recently one went for $280 w/ 20" mag extension included. Minus about 115 for the extension, makes 165 for the bayo adaptor. Looks great but have no idea on the originality on this.
A little rich for my blood.

Actually, I happened to be the buyer. I figured buying that gives me a damn good excuse to buy a 870. I would like to build up a MK1 clone eventually, but for now I am gonna put together something a little different.

I have to pick up either a Canfield or Poyer book on trench guns to figure out the specifics on the MK1. Anyone know any other good sources on these guns?

I have Canfield's book, not much about the Mark I.
Amazon.com has it.

I sure wish that someone would make a repro of these for a decent price, I'd pick one up.

Hmmmm, any photos or details or anything? I'll probably go for the Poyer book then, but I have a feeling there wont be much in that either. Info off the net is pretty scant. Seems the m97's, m12's and 520's get all the attention.
Anyone know what 870 version they were built on? I am guessing a wingmaster?

There are three paragraphs and one small picture of a Mark 1 in the book.
Canfield says virtually none have appeared on the collector's market. I would Assume they were built on Wingmasters because they came into service at the close of the Vietnam war.

As far as I know they where based on a standard 870, probably a wingmaster, 20" barrel with rifle sights I was told was the standard configuration.

According to Canfield's book...

In 1969 The Marine Corps bought 3230 870 MARK 1 shotguns from Remington.

Serial Number range in various government documents are noted to be between S081347V to S127697V. Most specimens recorded fall into the range of S117000V to S129000V. Receivers were standard Remington Wingmasters.

The contract spelled out the specifics of the shotgun which included: Parco Lubrite finish. A a 21-inch MOD barrel with only the rear sight brazed onto the barrel (front sight was part of the bayonet adaptor/barrel clamp). Plain unadorned (devoid of checkering) oil finished, beavertail forend and buttstock. Factory plastic buttplate as well as the +3 magazine extension and near "unobtainable" bayonet adaptor/barrel clamp.

Coming from a Marine Corps family I have wanted one of these since the first time I ever saw a pic of em. Now that I've got some of the information (books and info gleaned off the internet) I've been searching for parts for a couple years now. Though my 870 MARK 1 project is still just notes on paper, a second clone, one of the USN/USAF 870 has come along nicely (still need the bayonet adaptor/barrel clamp for that one too).

As for the USMC 870 MARK 1, I am on the hunt for an ole Wingmaster in the correct SN range. My intention is to get that receiver and a stock 28-inch MOD marked barrel. Have the barrel cut to 21-inches and maybe backbored to tighten up what would now be a CYL bore barrel (marked as MOD as the MARK 1s are). The most difficult part of the build I figure will be that blasted bayonet adaptor/barrel clamp, after that the uncheckered Wingmaster dovetailed forend and getting a rear rifle sight brazed on. From there it's all downhill ;)

So, y'all posted about this about two and a half years ago. If any of you guys read this and know where to find a bayonet adaptor/barrel clamp or scatter-shot brain has any interest in selling his, please let me know. Thanks.

ETA: ...add a pic for good measure

Welcome to the Basement, ch139. Sorry, but scatter-shot brain has not visited ShotgunWorld for 2 years, but Roland from Finland visited last month. Semper Fi!

Here is my military clone. It is a US Air Force clone with a front bead sight (the USMC version has rifle sights). It has a police wood stock set that has been cut back 1.5" and has a Limbsaver recoil pad added. It also has a 20" barrel, not a correct 21". So while it isn't 100%, I am happy with it.

I bought the bayonet lug extension years ago and haven't seen one since. I won't even rub in how cheap I got it for. I really like bead sights, so I am happy with it. Althought a XS Express sight set in a rifle sight version would be nice as well. I really should get the correct length barrel and stock set for it.

Hey yellowcarbon, love the shotgun. I've seen pics of your gun around the web before and am very envious. That barrel clamp/bayonet adaptor is exactly what I need for my USN build. USN and USAF guns were pretty much identical. Also, they both had the 20-inch CYL barrel; you have it correct there. The USMC 870 MARK 1 was the only one that had the 21-inch MOD barrel with only rear rifle-sight.

I don't know about the barrel length, but the USMC Mk1's had a front rifle sight. Well, some had just an open dovetail, and some were missing the rear sight. The rifle sight was a part of the bayonet mount though.

That's correct. The widely-seen pic of the FAST guy with the MkI and the open dovetail shows that well.

That's actually the image that was in my head when I was typing that. I saw them elsewhere in similar condition, but the M1014 was taking over when I was in. <3

Still saving for one of those.

This pic?

The front sight is indeed part of the barrel clamp/bayonet lug. Also, if you look closely, you will notice the barrel is a bit longer than the +3 magazine extention; it is 21-inches long on the USMC 870 Mk. 1
