well a big reason 410's are recommended for home defense is the size, they are small and a lot less intimidating to the shooter as a 12 ga.

I say get a firearm capable of discharging cartridges at a muzzle velocity exceeding 1100fps (i.e., any gun will do). Take it to the range and get good at executing kill shots at hallway hunting distance. Of course, if a little more is better, then a lot more is more betterer. As always, make sure it's a bad guy you're dropping. Too many news stories about spouses mistaking honey for a burglar.

I have always used a 20ga. loaded with basic #3 buck, 2-3/4 inch loads and have slugs in the tube as well. But the Glock 9mm is always quicker and ready on the nightstand!

For home defense you will definitely want to read David Kenik's book, "Armed Response." It covers most of the material in the basic course Massad Ayoob teaches at his Lethal Force Institute in New Hampshire.

Ayoob himself wrote, "In the Gravest Extreme."

Be absolutely sure of your target. Very serious. Very good to know.
