I have an old .410 S/S Springfield Arms Company, Chicopee Falls, Mass. USA. I can't find a model number, or serial number on the gun any where the only thing that I find is on the under side of the barrel where the forearm goes. there is a "J", about an 1" lower there is an "A", and just below that is the number 83748. I was wondering if any one would know anymore about it, I would appreciate the help.

Stevens made the Springfield, starting in 1920 and probably as late as 1950. the .410 singles are worth $50 t0 $125 depending on condition..The 83748 is the serial number..Bushrod

I dont know where that Stevens ever made the Springfield. At 1 time Savage and Stevens were 1 company making firearms together and then over a dispute the 2 split to become the companies they were in the begining.

I have 1 20 guage pump Springfield going back to when no Serial numbers were on them and its made by Savage Arms Company,Chicopee Falls, Mass. USA. I dont know where whats wrong, but that .410 could well be made by the same people.

Hate to dispute that word of Stevens, but from the 1960's to now all I have ever seen on 1 that said Springfield I've owned has been Savage Arms.Thats been .22's and shotguns.

I do have a Model 87 Stevens .22 Auto/bolt rifle and a Model 87D of the same. They made a 87A,87B,87C,and some of the last "C" are rare rifles from a man that worked on them until 1988 when died at the age of 94.He ahd seen alot of firearms I had over the years and worked on alot for me as well.

Anyone else have anything on the deal of Savage and Stevens both making Springfields?Be good to know if so..

Savage bought out the J. Stevens Arms Co. in 1920, operating it as a subsidiary until 1960. They used the the Springfield name to label the lowest grade of gun they sold in most of the models they produced. They were about the lowest quality gun produced in the US.
