Hi,
Today i ran across an old Stevens single shot 12ga, it has no model number that i can see, but it has NITRO SPECIAL engraved on the side, if anyone has any info on it, i'd appreciate it, especially where i could get a new firing pin for it.
Thanks

Please look closley at the frame and the barrel of this gun. The only single barrels Marked Nitro Special I am aware of is the Lefever Nitro Special, Model 2 Field and Trap and the Model 3 Single Barrel Trap Ventilated rib. These were made between 1927-1942 by the Ithaca Gun Co.

I've never seen one but from the illustrations, they must have been a very high grade single barrel. Does yours have a capped grip, checkered stock and octagonal shape on the chamber (or breech) end of the barrel? I believe I'd really like to have one in good condition.

Thanks for the replys,

It is definatly a Stevens, the stampings on the reciever are as follows:

right side:

TRADE MARK
STEVENS
REG U.S. PAT OFF & FGN

J STEVENS ARMS& TOOL CO
CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS U.S.A.
left side:

(in a fancy script print)
NITRO SPECIAL

on top of the chamber:

PATENTED AUGUST 12, 1913

these are the only markings that are on the gun

Well, you got me on this one. The good news is there are people on this board who can tell from the wording of the Stevens stamping the approximate manufacturing date and therefore the model no. Darn shame it's not a LeFever. For a single shot, that sure is a pretty gun.
