IC is a more open choke, good for close flushing game.

IM is a bit tighter than modified. Good for longer distance shooting.

In this case, "Improved" means better, (really slightly tighter in patterning.)

In other words Improved Cylinder is just a few thousandths more restriction or "tighter" and throws a slightly smaller, denser pattern than a standard Cylinder bore, (no choke).

The same goes for Improved Modified, just slightly tighter than the standard modified.

I actually like the English way of stating choke better than what is normally used this side of the pond.

Cylinder bore/no choke, pretty much a no brainer.

Improved Cylinder/Quarter choke. 1/4

Modified/One half, or just half choke. 1/2

Improved Mod/Three Quarter choke. 3/4

Full/Full

Now, just to make things more complicated, you can insert Skeet between Cylinder bore and Imp Cyl.

Also Light Mod between IC and Mod.

And Light Full between Imp Mod and Full as well.

Even more complicated, not all choke makers use the same measurements for any of these! So one makers particular terminology might not be the same as another's.
