My son and I did our first session of shotshell reloading tonight using AA hulls, and all went pretty well I think. Won't know for sure until I get a chance to shoot these loads at the range. Earlier tonight we shot a couple rounds of Skeet, and we picked up a bunch of black Remington hulls in good shape. Just for fun I looked up the specs for loading Remington hulls with the powder I settled on, Alliant E3, and surprise, I can load these hulls with exactly the same shot load, wad and powder drop (7/8 oz. shot, Remington TGT 12 wad and 17 grains of powder). The only item that is different is that I loaded the AAs using Winchester primers, and the Remington recipe calls for Remington 209 primers.

I was wondering if I can use my Winchesters instead. Anyone know?

Lyman's 5th Ed Shotshell Reloading Handbook lists the following 1 oz loads using e3: Rem STS/Gun Club, 17 gr e3, TGT12, Rem 209P, 1191 f/s, 7600 psi. Change to a Win 209 primer they show 1194 f/s, 7600 psi.

They do not list any 7/8 oz e3 loads.

Since the maximum working pressure for a 12 ga is 11,500 psi, I would have no qualms substituting a Win 209 for a Rem 209P with a 7/8 oz load.

Alliants website has a number of 7/8 oz loads with e3. I have been using 16gr in AA hulls, ww209, claybuster 12sl clones, and like them.

Yes, I was looking at the info on Alliant's web site, which is where I got the info to load the AA hulls. I was surprised they didn't show a 7/8 load for the Remington hulls using a Winchester primer and e3 powder... they do for other powders, just not e3. I guess if the substitution doesn't appear to be dangerous, considering they do list the exact same load in an AA hull with a Winchester primer, I will load up a few and see how they work. It would be most excellent if I could just load both hulls with identical stuff.

E-mail Alliant and ask them if you can sub Win 209's for the Rem in that recipe. In the past I have been advised to drop the powder charge a half grain when subbing a Win 209 for a Rem 209PSTS.

That's exactly what they told me to do. Very nice people at Alliant.
