I inherited my Dad's barely-used Model 1400 about six years ago and finally got around to giving it a fresh cleaning and taking it out to shoot sporting clays. It's a beauty of an old gun, and what a nice shooting gun!
But now I have questions.
I think this would be a great dove and quail gun and I'd love to use Dad's old gun in the field. But, boy, that 30-inch full-choke barrel ... So, the questions:
Are shorter more-open choke barrels are available for these guns?
Could a different barrel mess up the action?
I'm also not sure if this barrel would be OK with steel loads for dove on wildlife management areas.
Anyone know about this stuff, or know where I could find out?

Barrels on the 1400 are readily interchangeable, and can often be found on eBay or gunbroker.com. In fact, I bought a spare 20 ga. barrel for a 1400 I once had on eBay for less than $100.00. There don't appear to be any on either site today, but if you keep checking one will bound to come up.

Shop around carefully and you might luck out. Many times these guns go for sale at really discounted price. It might just be easier to get a different gun with a better barrel. many of the later model 1400's had screw in chokes which are the same as mossberg, winchester and the old browning style. Good luck, The 1400's were not highly regarded but I believe they are underrated.

You can also use barrels marked Model 1500 or Model 140 Ranger. You can't use any of the 120, 1200 or 1300 pump gun barrels. Happy hunting.

You can use your Model 1400 safely with steel shot loads....you might also consider shortening your 30" barrel to something more usable and installing screw in choke tubes.....
