I have a J.C. Higgins 20 Guage Mod 2 3/4 bolt action Model Number 583.15. I do not see a serial number. Does anyone have any information on this shot gun? It is missing the spring and plug in the chamber. (I think the plug was wooden). I would like to find these parts. Also, where is the serial number located?

I have a 1965 sears 311; no serial no.

Less expensive guns made before 1968 quite often do not have ser. numbers.

If I'm not mistaken about the exact model number, the gun was made by High Standard. The plug was wood, as you note. I bel;ieve that you can get replacement parts at Numrich Arms, but I'm not sure about the conversion from Sears to High Standard with respect to model numbers.

You can buy a generic 20 ga tubular magazine spring here (http://gunsprings.com/GenPurp/TubeMagsNF.html). You're probably missing the follower too. I can't find one for your specific shotgun, but you may be able to use one like this (http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?c ... idDept=204) or one for some other manufacturer's shotgun. If you have access to any 20 ga pumps or semi-autos, try the magazine spring follower(s) in your Sears gun. If it works, buy another one from Numrich (www.e-gunparts.com).

Many (most?) magazine plugs are not model specific. Go to ebay and search for "shotgun plug" (without the quotes). You can even find wooden ones.

You may like to know that these shotguns were made by High Standard for Sears, and that models 583.15 have apparently been recalled (http://www.histandard.info/models/priva ... sBolt.html).

Safe shooting!

Only the 12 gauge was recalled, the 20 gauge was not. See http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stori ... 0000884021

The 583.15 was made by High Standard, and was also known as the JC Higgens or Sears Model 10. Note that is not the same thing as a High Standard Model 10, which was a semiautomatic shotgun.

Manuals are available for downloading here: http://www.histandard.info/manuals/sear ... index.html

Parts are available here: http://www.e-gunparts.com/products.asp? ... 780z10&MC=

Good info there Seamus. I hadn't come across the pdf version of the manuals. The article you linked in your first post sure enough says the 12 gauge is recalled, then it lists product numbers for 12, 16 and 20 gauge versions of the shotgun (according to the histandard.info link in your second post).

I think before I shot that baby I'd call and check on whether it's recalled or not. That finders fee of $160 for the bolt is about 3X the value of the gun. They were offering that 9 years ago and may not be doing that any more.

Safe shooting!

By the way jfhollidaysr, if you keep the gun try to buy the real parts from e-gunparts.com using Seamus' link before you go the generic route I suggested.
