I have a Stevens model 940a in 12 gauge. How do I determine the age of this gun? I can't find a serial number. Does this mean it was made before 1968?
Thanks in advance for any information.

Wayne

Stevens did not serial number many of their guns before it became law in 1968. There is a code on many of their guns that will give you the date. It is usually two letters in a small circle, as I remember. My reference book is not here just now, sorry.

If the opening lever is on the side of the receiver, this is the follow-on to the Model 94 Stevens. As I recall, the change was made about 1962. The lack of a serial number puts it before the Gun Control Act of 1968, so that narrows down the time frame you are looking for.

The opening lever is on the side of the receiver. Where would the circle be located? I find what appears to be a small circle near the breach end of the barrel. However it was not stamped very straight and I cannot read it. The metal is in about 99% condition and the wood slightly less. Would the value be somwhere between $50-60? I actually bought this one with some more guns and have about $75 in it.

Thanks for all your help.

The $75 price is in the ball park of what I have been seeing in the last year or so.

You may never be able to pin down the exact date of manufacture, but it is probably between 1962 and '68. These are not collector pieces, so you won't find the amount of information that you would on a 94 Winchester.
