I had a local gunsmith install ghost ring sights on my Mossberg 500. Either 1 of 2 things happened:

1. When he soldered the sight ramp on, he failed to use a heat sink correctly, or
2. This is a manufacturing defect

Fortunately, Mossberg took my old barrel and sent me a new one free of charge. My question is - has anyone ever seen this with a Mossberg 500? Any thoughts on what actually happened?

Never seen it, but I'd like to hear from some of the gents around here who may have on this issue as I also own a mossberg.

I'll venture a guess!! Maybe he clamped it in a vise to solder the ft. sight and somehow stressed the the mount by applying pressure to the barrel while it was hot and compromised the integrity of the solder. But this is mere speculation on my part!!!

Your guess #2 is certainly possible, but given the circumstances, I think your 1st guess is probably the answer. I have seen posts like yours before (this and other forums), on both Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s, and coincidentally, a very common thread seems to be soldering on front sights. Good job by Mossberg on taking the weight for this, though.

I have seen it before. It happened under the same circumstance as yours, the smith soldered a for sight on.

I think it started with the smith soldering the sight on. One other thing, sometimes there is a slight gap between the barrell lug and the magazine tube when the barrel is installed. I have seen people over-tighten the locking bolt to try to eliminate this gap and this can cause stress on the soldered joint when firing.

Thats what I was thinking. Either over or under tightened + firing stresses causing it to fail.
