I was given this older shotgun from a neighbor for self defense at home and have shot it b/4 using #6 shot in 2 3/4" shells. It seems to work fine, but would it be safe to use 3" mag type shells with buckshot for more security than the #6 bird shot I have now?

I wonder if 3" buckshot would fit into the gun and can the bolt acction handle it safely?

The chamber size should be marked somewhere on the gun. That being said, 2-3/4" buckshot is plenty for home defense.

The chamber on the gun is 2 3/4" but when I ask for buckshot in 20 ga. they show me 3" mag loads? I'm not sure it comes in smaller lengths?

Looking at 20 gauge 2-3/4" buckshot on midway, I only found a couple of Federal #3 buckshots. So there is hope, however slim it may be.

Do a search for 20 gauge caliber, and you'll see only #3.

Same for Remington, only a #3 buckshot.

Same for Winchester, only a #3 buckshot.

20 gauge buckshot is readily available in 2 3/4" shells. 3" will not work in your gun.

#3 Buckshot, not to be confused with 3" shells, is the most common 20 gauge buckshot loading (at least in the 2 3/4" variety).

The only difference in 2 3/4" and 3" is a few more shot. The velocity is approx. the same.

Lady,

When I said "readily available", I should have noted that is the case in "normal" times. It may be a little hard to find right now as ammo across the board has been scarce since the election. Here is one source though, and if you google "20 gauge buckshot", you might find some others:
