This is a follow-up to a post I made a week or so ago. I've decided to start my Browning collection and found a straight-stock Browning Auto and didn't know much about them, but fell in love with it and bought it. I had only seen them with a round or flat knob. I appreciate those of you on here that advised me. Oh, I picked up a 95-98% vent rib, 28", Mod, Belg, round knob, Sweet Sixteen (SN: S816xx) the other day also. My dream gun and the second addition to the collection. Broke now......gun buying is over until next summer! lol

I've included all of the Belgium proof marks and as many pics as I could. The serial shows it to be made in 1933 I believe and I'm not sure what the choke is (I included a pic). All serial numbers match (rec, barrel, forearm) and it is in great shape, but doesn't have the original FN butt plate. If any of you see one that will fit it, please let me know. Feel free to pass along anything you know about it! Thanks!!!

This explains the proof marks: http://damascus-barrels.com/Belgian_All_Proofmarks.html

The H w/a star* that is show in the receiver and side of the barrel indicates, it appears, the inspector or proof code controller. It looks like it was: Woit Christophe (1938-1968). That doesn't seem to go with the date of manufacture though (1933). It also has a Z w/a star* on the underside of the barrel where the choke indication is. This would have been inspector/proof code controller Degobert Théodore (1924-1949). Very interesting stuff. Would love to have pics of them.

Where do you find the Belgian date code?

That's a nice one. Congratulations! The Sweet was a good find too. Funny how these things sorta come in bunches.

Congrats rlspace , that is a beautiful gun. How is the checkering on the wrist of the stock?

Thanks man; it is in really good shape, well, smooth but still defined on the rear. It is worn smooth as silk under the forearm, but you can still see the checkering on the upper sides and in the corners. I like that though - lots of history. It has been taken care of and not abused at all, just honest use it appears. If you see an original buttplate that will fit it, give me a shout.

Again, I appreciate your help when I had questions!

The bore diameter is measured in millimeters

0.720 in = (18.3 mm) bore in millimeters measured 22cm (8.6 in) from muzzle
0.724 in = (18.4 mm) bore in millimeters measured 22cm (8.6 in) from breech

.004 constriction would place it in the Skeet choke range, a very rare find.

kg is the weight in grams of the barrel when proofed
978 grams is a little over 2 lbs

VERY NICE gun by the way, nice wood too !!

A typical horn butt plate is the correct one for the period,
measure the length and width you need, I have a few.

Congrats on joining the Sweet club, best kept secret in bird hunting !!
A very nice start on your collection !!

Thanks and I appreciate that info; I had no idea what the choke was, glad to hear that it is in the Skeet range!!! The gun is actually in better shape overall than what I expected. Yeah, I'm very excited about the Sweet 16. I've wanted one since I was a little boy. It's too nice to carry in the Grouse woods, but I will definitely be using it on Quail!

I took some pictures to help you determine which plate I will need. MANY thanks!!! Just let me know if you do have one that will fit it and the details.

Great find! Thanks for sharing. Real nice specimen in great shape...complete with both swivels! I love seeing pics of these old straight stockers. It looks like finish has been added over the worn checkering at some point and it looks good. I'm curious about the stamping near the carrier...

Also, out of curiosity, what type of buttplate was on it (as seen in picture 12)?

Sorry, I just saw your post. The buttplate on it now says Bargun with an IG symbol in the middle.
