Howdy
Does anyone know what the 870 Special Purpose was designed for ? Is it an 870 Police with special features ? or is it for hunting?
It has a rifled barrel and a scope mount that is attached to the barrel on one end and is floating back toward the receiver.
God Bless

probably hunting gun, idk though, law enforcement usualy dont put scopes on tactical shotguns, they are used more often for dynamic entries like blasting down doors, which requires very little in the optics area lol

The "special purpose" designation in Remington speak usually denotes nothing more than a matte finish and synthetic stocks/forends. It doesn't have any special "tactical" implications.

Yes I bought one when it 1st came out in the mid 80s. They were originally a hunting gun in 3" mag. with a dull finish (non glare finish) wood and metal. Mine has a oiled wood stock with almost a glass beaded parkerised (sp?) like metal.

It is a rifled slug hunting weapon for sure! Works great. The newest version has a R3 Limbsaver recoil pad. The cantilever scope mount is very nice as the scope stays with the barrel while field-stripped for cleaning.

I have always been under the impression that there were two different Remington SP guns, deer and turkey. As the name "special purpose" implies, they are geared toward a more specific type of hunting than a Wingmaster or Express. The SP deer gun has the cantilever scope mount attached to the rifled barrel and a raised comb for use with a scope. The turkey SP comes with a smooth bore, screw-in choke barrel. I think its a 24" barrel but I'm not sure. I believe both are available in camo finishes.
