Ok im 50 yrs old and nearsighted -5.50 I am being told that shooting heavy recoiling guns can cause a detached retnia. I am gunshy ( pardon the pun ) because I shoot a Ithaca Deerslayer 12 gage pump that icks like a fricken mule.

Would I be further ahead gettin a 20 gage Remington 1100 or 1187 ?? If so how much lighter recoil is this and could I duck hunt with it too ??

I got a Beretta 390 12 gage but that kicks pretty good too...

Anyone here real nearsighted and ever heard that before

Don't think you want to go down to 20 ga for ducks. You could pay a gunsmith to have a recoil reduction system put on your 390.

humm maybe. What would a 20 gage with a slug barrel cost ?? Would a 20 auto be a lot less recoil ??

Which deer gun would recoil the lightest ??

To answer your topic question - the heaviest gun, shooting the lightest load, will give you the least ACTUAL recoil. A gas action will also reduce felt, or perceived, recoil. If your guns are knocking the snot out of you, it sounds like the stocks do not fit you properly. A properly fitted stock will also aid greatly in recoil reduction.

Who is telling you this? Qualifications? Show me the studies.

I've heard it before with no proof. In 26 years I've never seen an RD from recoil, doesn't mean it can't happen but, if it does, it's likely a coincidence!

A Remington 1100 with the latest hi tech pad would likely be the lightest recoiling gun currently made.

Not necessarily true - remember, a 20 is also usually lighter, so that can offset any potential recoil reduction from the payload, in fact - it might recoil MORE

Ok how about finding a slug barrel for my Beretta 390 and adding a recoil pad. Now would that kick less than or the same as a 20 gage Rem 1100 ??

And is there a slug barrel for this gun ??

Because of the way my shoulder is permanently injured ( nerve damage)
A shotgun with lighter mass ( 2o or 28 gauge) and lower pressure loads seem to work better for me.
Now, my duck and goose shells are factory Winchesters or Kent sometimes, but they are being fired in a lighter gun, which I have to hold - that is where my main problem lies.
I have not problem shooting a box of 20 guage #2's in a morning, but the same stuff in a 12 leaves me dead in the water for the evening hunt.
Same as my match rifles, I can't hold a heavy rifle anymore, combine that with a heavier type of bullet, and i'm done after a few rounds.

My 20 and 28 take the birds out of the sky nicely, so I am not too worried about it, however....

I have no less than four four friends who have had retina surgery due to shooting heavy recoiling rifles.
The doctor said it COULD have been from any other number of things, but the number of rounds these guys used to fire ( 458 WIN., 338 lapua, 338/378 WTHBY>, etc) in light guns made him assume that that was the cause.
he did not put it together until he relized that these guys were all shooters.
They do not know each other either, but two belong to the same gun club.....

This sounds like a job for Ken Rucker. His ''Bump-Buster" recoil system is amazing. Have him put one on your 390, or on a new 391 Teknys, or 1100. The Teknys is the lightest recoiling gun I have ever shot. The 1100 is renound for it's low recoil.

Agree with drjim
Same as Gracoil system. Less recoil with this than the 20 gauge your looking at.

the lightest recoiling shotgun I've ever shot was a Browning recoiless trap gun, that thing was awesome, too bad they didn't make it in a repeater. I used to have a Winchester SX2 and that thing was pretty light in the recoil department, especially with light loads.

There is no one "Lightest Recoil Shotgun".

What you can do is have your 390 fitted to you. The shims may not be enough to make it fit correctly. The second thing to do is to add as much weight to the gun as you can handle. The 390 being Gas operated won't be affected reliablity wise by any amount of weight added. Another thing to do is to use a lighter load in both the load weight and a lower velocity. The 390 is one of the better models for cycling lighter loads. You can also get after matrket parts to make it cycle even lighter loads. The last thing to do would be to add an aftermarket recoil pad.

what would the problem be adding a recoil pad ??? You still dont think a rem 20 auto would be easier on the recoil??
