A guy was commenting at the range that his 391 had experienced jamming and the ammo was Kemen Super 32. We checked the unfired shells and they seemed to be somewhat flaring out at the front.

He also had Rios, made by the same factory, and they were OK.

Opinions?

I only can speak from my own personal experience of shooting thousands of rounds of Kemem 12 gauge through 391's. Kemen ammo is very good.

Your observations of the end flare-out is caused flats that are miss-handled and bumped around, mashing the shells on the end boxes. I have seen this, and it is usually isolated to some of the shells in two of the ten boxes per flat. Are you guys basing your conclusion on the condition of 10 shells or 100 shells or 1,000 shells?

You state that the gun is jamming. What kind of jamming? Is the spent hull failing to eject, or is the second shell failing to feed properly?

The second round failed to feed 100% of the time.

We examined the condition of the boxes and they looked crisp and straight and bore no signs of mishandling. We opened boxes at random and they all looked the same, flaring out at the end. The flat itself was straight and had no dents.

Another shooter had a flat of Kemen Super 28 (this is a 12 Gauge 1 oz shell) and those were straight.

Having shot both RIO and Kemen before, I have found them to work equally well. (if you're getting them form the distributor in JAX, have you contacted him?)

Kemen and Rio are both made by UEE Cartucheria Deportiva SA in Bilbao, Spain whose very wide range of loads with differences in levels of antimony and shot surfacing are adding to the complexity of ordering and obtaining the desired shells. One needs to know for instance that Kemen Diamond Shot is branded Rio Star Shot Silver, that the level of antimony drops from 5% to 3% but it is more spherical, etc.

Personally I don't use them as my son provides me with an unending supply of Federal papers N119, 7/8 oz. at prices below what I'd have to pay for the UEEs.

Kemen now has a plant in Tennesse. A group of us ordered 10 pallets from them.

This is a new plant and maybe they haven't gotten the bugs out yet, but I've heard several complaints.

I had a shell that seemed a little swollen; when fired it sounded like a 458 mag. Other complaints I've heard is that many of them will not funtion in semi-autos. The shells look normal.

I like Kemen and think they will get their factory straightend out.

(Oh,by the way, I posted once before about firing a swollen shell and I got my hiney spanked here by many for doing that. Please don't leacture me again; I've learned my lesson well.)

Thank you. Good information that I will pass along to the guy with the 391.

Are the Flats/boxes marked "Made in TN, USA"? How is one to know?

Thanks.

Just got my hands on a box of the ones that failed to feed that 391:

Kemen Super 28, Load: KMSU2875

1 oz., 2 3/4 Dram, 7.5 shot.

Made in the USA by American Sporting Supplies LLC, 5893 Hwy 230 West. McEwen, TN 37101.

The shells are black and bulging at the front perimeter.

Scala,

I have also used Rio, then Kemen ammo made in Spain with very few problems. Our group has now shot about two pallets of shells from the Kemen plant in McEwen, TN. There have been some minor problems, including:

- Boxes not taped, so they fall apart when you pick them up.
- A few poor crimps on some shells.
- A few bulges in the outside shell.
- A box or two without a label applied.
- One different color shell in a box.
- Etc.

Most of these are insignificant, and we have not seen any failure to fire, double loads or any other major problem. Most of us are shooting O/U, so there have been no problems with shells not ejecting. I'm guessing the bugs will be worked out soon.

It is my understanding that Rios will (or are) also being made in the same plant.

Hope these problems are now worked out, as we are pulling together our next order.

I.S.

Yes Kemens and RIO's are now being made in TN. They say so on the case and box. I have shot many cases of each and have to say that I have seen a few problems with crimps not closed all the way and a bit of a bell shape at the nose. Also some were inconsistent and seemed to recoil heavy. These are problems that they do need to fix. I only had 2 shells out of the last few cases that were odd though.
