Hello everyone!
I saw a used Mossberg 500a pistol grip locally. It is used and has a front grip. Asking price is $165, which seems a little steep. My main motivation is home defense with the occasional recreational shooting.
I know that pistol grip is difficult to control, but does the front grip help? Should I shell out a little more and get a non-pistol grip? What else should I look for?

Thanks for any help.

The Mossy 500 is a very good gun, the only pump gun that has a reputation any better than a Mossy is the Remington 870. That is my opinion and that is purely subjective, Mossy's are still a very good gun. Have you fired a gun with a front pistol grip? I suggest you do that first to see if you like it. $165 doesn't sound to bad considering that they are $350 for a new sporting version. I was bidding on a retired 870 Wingmaster Police on gunbroker.com a few weeks ago, and it was nice gun too. It sold for about $200. You can pay close to $1000 on the opposite side of the tactical spectrum, but do you really need a totally tricked out Mossy 590A1 or 870 from Wilson Combat? The gun you're considering is a good gun, price sounds good, but it's all about what you want and what you want to pay for.

Best,

Adam

Thanks! I'll take another close look and if everything checks out proceed and buy it.
I'm a big guy, so the recoil won't send me flying. And I'm not gonna try to shoot it with one hand.

I have owned a lot of 500s in the last couple years, and still have 3. I believe the gun you mention is over-priced. The pistol grip is the downfall. You will at least want a folding stock. As-is I wouldn't pay over $100.00 for it.

Well, the decision was made for me: They won't sell to me anyway because I am not a US citizen (permanent resident) - company policy. Way to lose business.
Gives me the opportunity to shop around.

OK, what about this one here? Good price? Can the butt stock and the pistol grip be installed simultaneously?

*Edit: Found the thread on it, but it was inconclusive.

A good price check on new firearms is Davidson's Gallery of Guns, www.galleryofguns.com.

I'd skip the pistol grip anyway. You should be able to find a 500 or 870 with a regular stock fairly cheap. If worse comes to worse buy a field model and an extra barrel. This will let you shoot clays and get more trigger time. One can only shoot paper for so long before it gets pretty boreing.

The gun you described is totally useless for anything except HD. Get a standard stocked gun with a GOOD recoil pad. If you must, you can add all types of the combat crap but wind up with a gun that by switching a few parts can cover a number of uses. Get a nice field model to be the base for anything else you want to do ie. 28in. barrel vent rib, and (again) a good recoil pad. Just because your a "big" guy doesn't mean the recoil wont be just as uncomfortable after a while.....Jack

You can buy good condition older used 500s on Gunbroker any day for $100.00 or less. I buy them for about $80.00 or so. That leaves a lot of money for your extras and accessories.

Dick's sporting goods has the mossberg 500 combo on sale for $250 here in Illinois.

2 barrels, a smoothbore and a rifled slug barrel.

Are those different lengths as well?
My Wal Mart also has the 500a for sale at $227. Found the same type at a local pawn shop for $190 with additional chokes. 2 size barrels would be good since I have decided I'd like to try hunting in addition to hd. So right now it's between these two types:

Would it make sense to get one of them and then buy an extra barrel or find a combo or just go with the longer barrel?

If you want a shorter barrel for HD stay away from the rifled ones.

Sorry to keep asking, but I'm just a little overwhelmed by all the different models. Is there a good compromise shotgun, like one of these with a 20" barrel? http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/prod ... s_id/47809 or http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/prod ... s_id/46281
Or would it be cheaper to buy the 50120 and a shorter barrel?
