You're not exactly reading that correctly. What was compared was shot suitable for older barrels, not "the best No-Tox." Hevi-Shot is just a brand, not a specific shot anymore.

It was Hevi-Shot Classic Doubles that was compared to Kent TM. The density varies all over the place, with Hevi-13 and Dead Coyote heavier than lead, but most of the other "Hevi-Shot" isn't all that heavy and is not as dense as lead nor as dense as Kent TM. Hevi-Shot "Pheasant" is another one of the really poor Hevi-Shots, particularly considering the anemic payload of just 7/8 oz. in 20 gauge. The Classic Doubles in a 3 inch 20 gauge shell is still 1 oz. @ 1150 fps.

A Kent TM 3 in. 20 gauge is 1-1/8 oz. @ 1360 fps and it drops pheasants stone dead past 40 yards. No comparison on the patterning board or in the field.

This is a rooster that hit the air towards the end of the day just yesterday:

what are your criteria?
money? performance? etc.

there is some super heavyshot nickel tungsten stuff that has a whopping 18g /cc. not impressed?
lead is 11g/cc ish, steel 9g/cc ish, hevishot 12g/cc, and dead coyote / hevi13 13g/cc.
apart from throwing these numbers at you what do they actually mean? absolutely bugger all if you cant point the gun at something.

also there is no perfect nontox. each has there own different charicteristics.
steel, good pellet count per oz. poor long range performance. cheap, like a budgie!
bismuth, as good as lead, must in older guns.
hevishot, good performance, cost a fortune.
hevi13, same again
18g /cc real poor shotcount per oz /compared to lead. "insurpassed ballistic performance " cos` its so dense you have to drop a few shot sizes to keep the count up. but the long range ballistic performance makes up for it.

The manufacturer of my "nice" fixed choke guns, CSMC, recommended Bismuth as a non-toxic load.

Steel and the hard-as-steel alternatives may cause barrel bulges in some guns especially with IC and tighter chokes.

The price per shell is high, close to $2.50. However, the ammo price is rational compared to replacing a barrel on one of these high priced guns.
