Well the second rule after always checking to make sure a gun is unloaded is never load a round into the chamber until the gun is pointed down range and you are clear to fire. NEVER! The carnage in this pic isn't because the fella rested the gun on his foot it's because he ignored a basic safety rule.

This isn't real - it's Photoshop foot!

Even so, I've always thought those leather pads they sell for foot gun rests are stupid.

This happened over in Kansas a few years back. The person who shot himself in the foot was a blocker on a pheasant hunt and had a background in skeet and trap. The funny part (if there is one) is that he is a trauma surgeon in a local emergency ward.

I've seen this pix and there are many versions of who it is and what happened.

No gunshot wound looks like that. Period.

Show it to any physician.

I can't say if its real are not, however the tab that I use while shooting sporting clays would definitely not have the injury on that part of the foot. It would be more in the middle toe area.

As for the gun rest being stupid!!! Mine is just leather, didn't know they needed an IQ!! Just keeps my shoe clean.

This picture was posted here before, and it has been around at other internet sites for over a year. There was never evidence or even a first hand statement provided that confirmed that this injury was caused by the shooter resting the barrel on a leather foot rest pad. If anyone has factual evidence (not hearsay) contradicting my beliefs, please post it for our benefit. Otherwise, be cautious not to fall into making foolish assumptions followed by flawed reasoning.

A year ago this picture was posted on a "pistol" forum where everyone began over reacting about the dangers of carrying a 45 auto on half cock. But, isn't it funny that when you show a picture of a foot gunshot injury on a "shotgun" forum, people will just automatically jump in and proclaim the dangers of using the little leather barrel rest pads.

Now maybe if they sandwitched some Kevlar in those things.........

I saw it somewhere else claiming it was a guy who's CCW went off and that no one should carry with a loaded chamber.

Just think of the picture they could show to demonstrate that it's a bad idea to stick a cocked and loaded pistol down inside your front waistband.

I sincerely apologize to everyone who took offense at my calling those leather pads "stupid"

Of course they are, being inanimate items.

But nonetheless, I didn't mean to offend.

It is an interesting topic, whether the picture is real or not. I have been using a Beretta 390 for skeet and sporting clays. I just switched to a Beretta 686. The sporting clays ranges all have gun racks, so no problem. The skeet range has none, so you have to do something with your gun while others shoot. A buddy of mine and I shoot together so one has to throw and score while the other shoots. With the 390, I always rest the butt on the ground, and try my best to keep the muzzle pointed away from myself. Of course the action is locked open. From time to time the muzzle is inevitably pointed at my face.

The 686 is different. If not at the station ready to shoot, it should be open. However, I find it difficult to manage the clipboard with score card and the controls with the gun broken open. The leather pad is looking pretty good.

I've rested the muzzle of my gun on my shoe plenty. I've never done it with a closed gun. Thus, there is no possibility to shoot myself in the foot.

Just for the sake of the argument though, let's assume that you're an idiot and have disregarded about 5 simple safety rules and your gun goes off. You are shooting shot smaller than #7.5 at velocities less than 1300FPS. Even at that close range, I'm not sure the shot would penetrate through 1/4" of leather, your shoe, your sock and then through your foot. This is not a high powered rifle we're talking about here, these are target loads.

I could be wrong, I've never shot myself in the foot.

Still, it's not the safest practice and I probably shouldn't do it.

The rule don't load a gun and put it on you foot. It could happen. I'm not sure if the photo is real. I would think there would be more damage if it was a 12ga.

I have seen pictures of a hip-rest, sort of a stock holster worn on a belt and the shotgun stock rests in that.

Altho I take them off when shooting clays, several of my European shotguns have sling swivels and I li8ke to put a simple canvas sling on them when hunting.

You would be wrong. It would penetrate all that an more.

I tried a little experiment one time to see how powerful it could be. At point blank range Remington an AA #8's an 9's both went through 4 layers of 1/4" leather, 3/4" plywood an a 2" thick Sears catalog an kept on going an blew a hole through the bottom of my Moms #2 washtub.

Turned out to be a painful experiment for my backside.
