Does anyone use an Escort ( Legacy Sports )semi-auto for slugs? I am wanting to put together a relatively inexpensive 20 ga. semi-auto smooth bore slug gun for occasional hunts on public land. I can get an Escort w/ 26" barrel and probably have the reciever taps for a scope mount.

Hi Ronster

I have a 12 gauge Hatsan Escort semi-auto with a 26" barrel chambered 3" which is the same gun as the legacy sports escort. I shoot slugs with this cheap and cheerful turkish made shotgun. The only problem I've had is the barrel to receiver fit is not as good as it should be so some shimming would probably be in order.

The receiver is grooved on mine and I have fitted a 1.5 - 5 X 32 telescopic sight with no problems. The sight can be taken off quite easily and re-mounted with the minimum of zeroing for slug use. In fact just this evening I was shooting ducks with shot and tomorrow I will refit the sight and be paper punching on my local range with slugs.

Also you maybe interested to know the Escort multichoke shotguns take Beretta Mobil chokes so it's very easy to find a rifled choke for much improved accuracy.

As an after thought you may be aware in the UK slug shooting is a minority sport due to our represive firearms laws and while slug hunting deer is not illegal here the police will not let you use slugs for game shooting or pest control unless you can prove you have a problem deer on your land, and that as you can imagine is next to impossible. So our slug shooting is restricted to target shooting on "ranges approved for this calibre and class of firearm" and at the moment that is only on military ranges open to public use or some ranges under the control of the UKPSA There are other approved private ranges but these are few and very far between.

Regards
Badger

Thanks Badger. Sorry to hear about the repressive firearm laws of your land. The Leftwing liberals here would love to do the same. If the Escort barrel fit is not the best, perhaps the rifled slug barrel w/ cantilevered scope mount might be better. More expensive ammo though, and I would have to find an extra smooth bore barrel for small game.
