Got a friend that used my 835 the other day at trap & skeet and he liked it alot. He wanted a 835, but noone locally has one. He said he saw a Maverick 88 that he was interested in and wanted to know what the difference between it and a Mossberg 500 were.

From what I've noticed on the websites the differences I see are :

Ported barrel (500) versus non-ported ( 88 )
Comes with 3 choke tubes (500) versus one ( 88 )
Synthetic stock only ( 88 )
10yr Warranty (500) versus 1yr ( 88 )
tang safety on top (500) versus cross-bolt safety ( 88 )

Anyone see anything else different ?

The two primary differences are the safety and the slide bars. Instead of a top tang safety, the Maverick 88 has a crossbolt safety and instead of having an internal metal housing inside the forearm, the slide bars are pegged in. That's why the slide feels chunkier with an 88 than with a 500. Also, it's easier to find a Parkerized 6-shot Maverick 88 than it is to find a Parkerized 6-shot Mossberg 500.

The 88 seems to beg to be fitted with a Knoxx Sidewinder Tactical conversion kit. That is, unless it's a Maverick 88 Bullpup, but if you can find one of those, you've found something rare. If you shoot right-handed, go for the Bullpup 88 (assuming you can find one).

I bought the Maverick for one reason the price. I am not a big shooter. Through the years I have hade winchesters to weatherbes. At one time or the other they had all given me some kind of trouble.
I thought about how microsoft makes a perfectly good to the specks pentium 3 chip. Then they go in and drop what is know as the t2 memory in half ( this memory i reairly ever used) and they sold the chip for hundreds less (called celeron). Sounds crazy but true. I took this sales tactic and took a chance on the maverick.
It is not a gun for compertition, trick, air or water skeet shooting but for the agerage joe the $150 gun works well. The pump silde does not twist all over the place (savage) and there are alot of parts and upgrades that fit it from the mossberg line.
I feel it is a bargen and a sleeper. once the word gets around I feel it ill be a good saler for us weekend to once a year shooters.

Sorry to hijack this post but...

Lacy,
Microsoft doesn't make chips... Intel does.

Back to the subject at hand. From what I've heard about the 88, it is a rugged gun like its sibling the 500. But the 500 will give you lots of versatility like interchangeable chokes that the 88 doesn't. That's all I know about the 88.

The Mossberg 500 is made in the USA. I believe the Maverick 88 is made in Mexico.

The 2 are almost identical. I have both. There is not one part that is not interchangable. Like Iggy said, the most noticable is the safety. The 88 does have the accu-choke system of the 500. Here is my personaized custom 500.

Mark my dear friend, I sense that you are one of the faithful and so no offense taken. However, I am told that my appearance is somewhat that of a Doomster Geezer. I have been fighting evil since.... well, lets just say for many years now. Soon, the judgement will come to those who reject the truth and the faithful will be rewarded and recieve their rest and their promise. Also, what is chips laughing at??

Mark, I agree. Looks like Grim Hunter is kin to the Grim Reaper, I see the family resemblance. chips, not to worry, when it comes to the good guys, I think G R is just a big teddy bear, its the bad guys he is rough on.

Grim Hunter,

Your face shows the wear and tear from years of fighting evil. Keep up the good work (but how about a haircut!). :D

Oh please!!! He probably thinks you're ugly. Come on, it's not it's 100% his fault. He's probably one of the most giving people you will ever meet. Give the guy a break......-Matt Latham
