Certainly not bad, the 390 is one of the worlds best semi-autos. The 391 has a slightly different gas system and a narrower forearm. The 390 is a little easier to clean.

Look on GunsAmerica.com, AuctionArms.com, and Gunbroker.com for price comparison. Looks like a pretty good price to me.

My 390 (12 ga.) will eat  anything including 7/8 oz. loads.

Hope this helps.

rhill1 hit her on the head. The 391 is also just slightly lighter in weight than the 390. The 390/3901 series as well as the Pintail/ES100 has been discontinued for 2004.

Is the 391 worth the $200 + more?

If i where you i would save up the extra money and buy the 391. If you buy the 390 you will always wonder. The most important thing is to get one of those guns and dont look back.

It really important point is how the gun fits or feels to you. I know some people who have gone to the 391 and then come back to their 390. Conversely, I know people who are glad they made the move to the 391. So, try them both. In my opinion there is not a quality difference for the $200.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.I was originally going to go with a Remington 1100 (pretty heavy) but when I pulled up that Beretta it fit me so much better.I am looking at the 20 gauge with the adjustable length stock (it seems to fit my short stocky frame much better, and most guns are too long ie. my buddies ES 100) I will try to check out the 391 today. Thanks for being so helpful.

This isn't relevent to 390 vs 391, but I was looking at a few used 12ga autos. I picked up and fiddled with all three (Win 1400, Ithaca/SKB 300, and Beretta AL2). They were all about the same price ($10 diff cheapest and most expensive) and condition. The 1400 felt like a brick laden 2x4. The 300 was nice, real nice. It was on it's way home with me. Then I picked up the Beretta. It comes up "right" with the eyes closed. It feels like it weighs maybe 5lbs.

That's how I pretty much select any gun. Keep playing until I find what feels the best. Then I worry about brand name/model.

I've got over 11,000 rounds through one of my 390's and it just keeps humming right along. :) I prefer the 390 to the 391. I just like the feel and balance better, plus the 390 is easier to clean and maintain. I think that Beretta got it right when they made the 390. The later versions (391, 391 Optima, etc) are just variations on the same theme to keep something new in front of the shooters to get them to trade in their perfectly good guns in order to buy the "latest and greatest". If you don't think this goes on, then you don't know some people...... OR the gun business. :D

I have a 391 12ga and bought the wife the 3901 20ga. If I had known how nice the 390 series was I would probably own 2 390 guns. Her 20ga is lite, swings and points great. Had the stock cut down, a Graco adjustable plate and Kick Eez sporting clay pad put on. My wife does not turn black/blue after 50+ rounds now. The 390 is easier to clean in the gas area, nothing to un-screw.

Well, I purchased a 390 used at the local gun shop. Couldn't beat the price at $400.00. Everyone said how great and wonderful they were. I had everyone let me shoot their Brownings, Remingtons, Winchesters, Benelli's and just about everything else. So as far as the bang for the buck, I figured that I could sell it or return it and get something else. The cons?
It doesn't like "Wally-World" Federal cheapo ammo. It will jam now and then. The more expensive stuff it performs on great. So, I pay $1.85 more for a box, but the benefits outweigh the cost. I love the gun, and I don't think I will trade it for anything now! Good luck.....

Where are you getting 20 Gauge synthetic 390s for $520?

I have one, and I want another one. AFAIK they're going away, and the 390 is a DAMN good shotgun. The 391 will still be around next year.

I have a 390 and a 391. I like both. They're somewhat different, but share a lot of parts. The 390 is simpler, and it works just as well as the 391 does. It's a bit fatter and heavier.

Other than their girth and weight, the 391 and 390 differ more in style than substance.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Exactly how I feel.
By-the-way, I own both, 390 (x3) 391 (x1).

 LOL

I never look at the dates on posts. It seems I should.

Not only is the gun no longer available, even if it were it wouldn't be $520. Oh well. That's what I paid for mine NIB a couple months ago, but that was a one-time thing...

One of the things I liked about the 390, is the "swing" balance it has. Points well. It is much lighter than my Mossy 500. I am not really concerned about recoil (it is a 12ga). The bolt action is "SMOOTH". Can't wait till tomorrow, November 14, 2009, as it is the 1st day of Quail in New Mexico. I have slid a few rounds in the gun this last week after work, and took some rabbits with it for the table. It is sweet. I am excited..........
