Just a trip down memory lane.

Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and "Trigger" toured the UK and Ireland in 1954. I can clearly recall walking down to the Windsor Theatre in Bearwood, Birmingham with Mom and Dad from our home in Park Road just a mile or so away, and seeing the show. The two outstanding memories are of "Trigger's" counting routine and Roy himself shooting glass (?) balls thrown by Ms Evans, using a six shooter. My eight year old eyes were sticking out like organ stops!

I think this was the first live theatre show I'd ever been to (an abiding love affair ever since) and probably the first "real" gun I'd heard fired. Thank you Roy and Dale.

So did you ever see them, and what was your first live entertainment experience?

Eug

I met Roy Rogers back in about 1970 by chance. One of my uncles was a highway trooper and had the opportunity to escort Roy and Dale to an opening of one of their restaurants, or that is the story as I remember. He knew about it before hand and was able to get his two kids, another two cousins, and me to ride along with him. Roy and Dale autographed a picture for me which I still have. When the NRA convention was held in Minneapolis, I spent an hour eating lunch with a very pleasant man, Roy Rogers Jr. I was seated alone at a table and he just came up and joined me. He was as nice as I remembered his father and Dale being and was more interested in me than in talking about himself or his family. He was gracious enough to add his autograph to the picture of Roy and Dale's.
Thanks for the post Eugene, it dusted off some memories that had been on the shelf much too long.

Now Eug, just how many people do you think that are on SGW know what an "organ stop" is?

Are we talking about the things that let air in and out of the pipes on a pipe organ or are we talking about the restaurant in the Pheonix, AZ area that goes by that name as it has one heck of a pipe organ as an attraction? My high school alma mater changed locations and at the new one they added a "chapel" that became home to the largest pipe organ in the state at the time. One of the students played it very, very well. A well tuned organ of this nature, played by someone who knows what they are doing, is an incredible auditory experience.

My grandmother had a foot pump organ, looked like a piano, back when I was a kid. When she passed on to ther reward, the heirs and assigns, junked it, along with a lot of nice heirlooms. Had I been old enough to have a place to keep it, I would have stored that organ. No telling what it would bring on the market today. I don't know the brand of it as I was only eight years old when she died.

My grandmother also had a foot pump organ!! I had a great time playing with the stops. As to the OP question, I never saw them "live", but I did watch the show every WEEK. Does that count.

I met Roy Rogers at a rodeo in, of all places, Boston in 1959, I believe. He signed autographs and stayed about 30 minutes just talking to a group of about 25 kids. I was awestruck.

Would the name have been "Nelly Belle"?

Dave,

The Windsor was on the corner of Dunsford Rd and Bearwood Rd, from memory one up from Richmond Rd going towards "The Bear" crossroads. It became the Ice Rink, and is now a snooker hall, or it was a couple of years ago.

My Mom had a workmate (she worked in the cafe at Thimblemill Baths; Mrs Evans?) who lived in Richmond Rd; I can remember going there a few times. It really is a small world.

To young to have ever seen him in person but i did go to the museum. In Branson MO, there is a museum were you can watch Roy Jr sing and see his stuffed horse trigger and see the jeep and all kinds of artifacts from his and her life. you can even buy antique items like a yo yo with his face on it from the 50's or when ever it was. I had the time of my life but its kind of expensive.

It was around 1956 or 1957. The place was the Fat Stock Show at the Coliseum in Houston. I not only shook hands with Roy, I also got to pet Trigger's nose. I have met governors, senators, presidents and even a first lady. I have even met a few minor celebrities. Let me tell you...nothing in my life has ever compared to meeting the King of the Cowboys!

Used to go to Thimblemill baths as a kid - I wonder if Mrs Evans was lady who took me to wash basin to be sick after I tried my first "Capstan" Ciggy while drinking cup of Bovril
First year of my married life was spent in a flat in Sandon Road opposite Dunsley Road just where number 8 bus came out from Hagley road.
Small world indeed :)

Dave
