(I am not sure in which forum to post this question)

Is there a difference between Scopes, Red-Dot sights, and Holographic sight for shotguns versus the same devices for rifles and handguns? Are sighting system made for shotguns suppose to be made better do to heavy recoil or is it just because of eye relief? My shotgun (with slugs) does not kick any more than my big rifles, in fact I thing it kicks less.

What is your opinion and experience with these different sights, and which do you recommend and why? I am a little cheap right now and I don't expect to spend more than $60 on such a sight, so the EOTeck is out.

Thank you.

For $60 you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Try buying used or check eBay. Stay away from red dots and reflex sites in that price range.

To the best of my knowledge, shotgun specific scopes are not made to a higher level of quality. Infact, shotgun specific scopes tend to be of a lower to mid-level quality. Higher quality scopes do not tend to bother with such restrictive marketing labels.

Real world differences in the shotgun specific scopes are that shotgun scopes will typically be paralax set to ~75 yards rather than ~100 yards. They may also have longer than standard eye relief.

The concensus on this forum is that if you don't require the shorter paralax or the longer eye relief, you will be better off with a non-shotgun specific scope. The same holds true for the special reticles...better off spending the money on optical quality.

I have bushnell red dots mounted on my S&W 41 mag pistol and a tasco accudot on a ruger super redhawk 44mag. The 44 gets the most use I shoot it about every month messing with different reloads. The only red dot that i have torn up was a tasco propoint that i had on the 41 the reostat got loose and came off. I can blame my holster for that really poor fit had to cram it in to get the flap to close.
Both of these gun are set up for deer hunting here in Illinois I have them sighted in at 70 yards. So far they have done well and held there zero. I also have a bushnell red dot on my 12ga mossburg 5500 turkey gun I shoot 2 3/4 inch 1 1/4 copperplated #5 handloads. On my 12 ga ush shotgun that i use for deer I have a leopould scope on it.

If you want to mount a red dot on a shotgun, I wouldn't hesitate to use a Ultradot in either 1" or 30 mm configuration...They hold up to the stiffest recoil.
