I had one of the Winchester 1001 o/u sporting back in the mid 90's but foolishly sent it back for the recall. Has anyone seen one of these since, are there any floating around out there that someone kept rather than returning? I'd like to get another one as a momento. Thanks.

Haven't seen one since the recall back in 1995. As much as I liked the 1001, I preferred the replacement that was offered (Browning Lightning Sporting). Good luck in finding one.

I understand you want a 1001 for sentimental values, but they were recalled for a very good reason. If you aren't seeing them on gunbroker, gunsinternational, or gunsamerica; there probably aren't many out there. You can also try chris showler and dawson's doubles.

The original 101 is readily available and as good as the 1001.

I would say the 101 is actually a better gun and is MUCH more available but that is some of the fun, the search. I have seen all the reports about the barrel bursting issues but I am from the X-files era in that there has to be some other deeper conspiracy behind the vast recall 8) I'm still digging and enjoying the ride, thanks for the help!!

I have a 1001 with a tube set that I would part with.

I know this is a very old thread. But I don't understand how you think sending back a seriously flawed and dangerous shotgun was, "foolish"? These shotguns were made with inferior barrel steel that had crystalized in heat treatment. Weakening them to the point many suffered barrel explosions. Some with low pressure target loads. Shooters were injured with these guns.

I had a friend who purchased one, and put a lot of custom gunsmith work into it. Having the forcing cones lengthened, among other things. Winchester reimbursed him for not only the cost of the gun, but also for all of the custom work had had invested in it. They would not have done that unless they thought the gun was a danger to their customers.

Keeping one of these ticking bombs in use some 20 years later, is just asking for some innocent purchaser of one of these things on the used market to get hurt. These guns should have been long gone over 20 years ago. Especially when there is zero reason to keep them. My friend took the money Winchester gave him and purchased a brand new Browning Citori Trap Grade, and has never looked back..... And he doesn't have to sweat bullets every time he fires the thing.
