I am quite confused about the value of these guns. You have probably seen the Gebruder Merkel Suhl model 201E 20 ga SST on GunBroker for $5500. That seems awfully high to me. However I have seen the 201E for under $3000 to over $6000. What seems a reasonable and fair price for these guns?

With respect to the 201e at gunbroker, I think the price of $5500 is well on the high side.

Last year about this time Champlin Arms had a nearly identical 201e 20 gauge with SST, but without the tarnish and without the marring of the checkering. They had it listed for $3200 or something close to that. I can also tell you that a good friend of mine picked up a lovely straight stocked 16 gauge 201e at a gun show in the St. Louis area last year for $1500 or so.

I have seen the 203e 20 gauges, which have the detachable sidelocks, and are really lovely guns, go for $6500, only $1,000 more than is being asked by the seller on gunbroker.

I might add too that I have seen some boxlocks with game scene engraved side plates (resembling sidelocks) sometimes mistakenly labeled as 201e's, when in reality they are 202e's (I believe). You can see an example of a 202e at Steve Barnett Fine Guns (stevebarnettfineguns.com). Those are usually more expensive (i.e., $6,000 or over).

If you aren't stuck on a 20 gauge, Hallowellco.com has a nice 12 gauge 201e for $3875 or so. Steve Barnett also has a nice looking 12 gauge 201e with 30" barrels (pretty unusual for a Merkel) for just $2750 or so. So as you can see, the gunbroker auction wants a $1600 - $2750 premium for going from 12 to 20 gauge.

Personally, I think the 200e's with case coloring, even if faded or completely worn, are nicer looking than those with the game scene engraving. Of course, I own a lovely 16 gauge 200e with faded case colors so I might be a bit biased. It's even lighter than the 20 gauge 201e listed on gunbroker.

Good luck in your search.

That is a very helpful analysis. Thank you.

For what its worth, Champlin Arms has a 1966 Model 201e 12 gauge. It has no cheek piece, although it has sling swivels (no big deal in my opinion -- I think they fit with Germanic/Austrian guns), but it has a rounded pistol grip that I believe is more rare and sought after. Price is $2,950. George is a good guy to work with.

Again, I like the 200e's, because I like case coloring or faded (even completely worn), and they tend to be less expensive.
