I just bought a can 6#, of Alcan AL5 at a garage sale. Where can I find loading data for this powder. I load 12 ga shotgun,357 and 38 pistol, and cast bullets in several rifles. I got the powder really cheap and would like to give it a try, but I guess the company is out of bussiness. Any info will be appreciated. Scooter

Do a search, we did this drill a while back. I may have some old load data but we're talking about in the '60s. The old Pacific Verilite wad bags had data on them for field loads and I may have some data for the handgun loads you describe. I've an ancient Handloading Digest that has some fairly generic data in it. By generic, I mean it isn't bullet or primer specific, just the bullet wt and the cargridge designation. I used to have some Alcan company data booklets, but they must have expired? Maybe self-destructed?? Anyway, I've not been able to locate them for something over 20 years. Lost in one move or another I suppose. Right along with my old Browning catalog, and my early '60s Herters catalog. Anyway, I'd suggest you do a search and if nothing usefull comes up get back here and I'll take another look.

Scooter;

Here is what I've got on AL-5

1 1/4 oz loads in 12 ga with a Pacific Blue Verilite wads in Large Capacity low base wads hulls, Federal plastic and AAs. Max load of 31 gr of AL-5. ( I'd back off the 31 gr to 29 or so in the AAs )

Handgun:

38 Spl. 146 gr 1111 fps 8 gr AL-5
148 " 1105 " 7.2 "
158 " 1060 " 7 "

357 Mag. 146 gr. 1396 fps 10.5 gr AL-5
158 " 1359 " 10 "

This is out of a '68-'69 vintage Handloaders Digest and off a Verilite wad bag. Also late '60s and early '70s.

"bout as good as it gets from me.

BP

ps. Can't find Blue Verilite wads?? :shock: The 12 ga Hornady Versalite and the WW 1 1/4 oz wad will do just about exactly the same thing. Versalite better in Federal and the WW better in the AAs.

My reloading records from the 70's show having used AL-7 in my .44 magnum with good results but I never tried AL-5. Apparently Alcan went defunct in the mid-70's because the Alcan loads are gone from the Speer manual #10, dated 1979. I only have metallic reloading manuals from this era. None of my other manuals show this powder for 38 or 357, but here are a few.
From Speer reloading manual #9, dated 1974.

.357 mag:
158gr speer lead SWC
8-9gr AL-5, CCI 500 primer, 1209 -1299FPS

125gr Speer Hollow point
10.5-11gr Al-5, CCI 500 primer, 1333-1391FPS

158gr Speer softpoint
9-9.5gr AL-5, CCI 500, 1058-1099FPS

38 Special:
148gr speer bevel base Wadcutter
4.9-5.5gr AL-5, Federal 100 primer, 835-928FPS

125gr Speer Hollow point
6.3-6.6gr AL-5, Federal 100, 1004-1054FPS

140gr Speer softpoint
6-6.5gr AL-5, CCI 500, 920-1010FPS

158gr speer lead SWC
5.1-5.5gr AL-5, federal 100, 840-901FPS

158gr speer softpoint
5.7-6.2gr AL-5, Federral 100, 840-906FPS

I also have a 6# can of AL5 & a 6# can of AL7 along with 2000? herters wads, for my favorite price which is of course free.:D Have some old data but could use some more for the wads and AL7. Would be interested in buying some old reload books if could find them, cause old reload components are cheap and lots of it around. BTW burnt powder where would I begin to search? Sorry I'm kinda confuser i mean computer illiterate.

GRIZ;

Well the place to start a search is scroll to the top of any page here at Shotgunworld and just below the "Welcome to the Friendliest shooting forum on the new" are some buttons and topics. Third one is "Search". Click it and go from there.

Lots of old reloading manuals are available on ebay for a couple of dollars. I recently purchased the Alcan reloaders manual,11th edition for a very reasonable price.If you have a lot of alcan powder and components like I do,it's worth every penny.
