Rifled slugs are fine. Just use I/C or Mod choke. Shoot as many as you like.

Which 500 barrel do you have?

You can use standard "rifled"(Foster or Brenneke style)slugs in a standard smoothbore barrel. An IC choke tube will probably work best with most "rifled' slugs.

A smoothbore slug barrel usually gives you better sighting options, such as rifle sights or a scope mount, but otherwise is no different than a field barrel. A rifled slug barrel can give better long-range accuracy but requires sabot slugs.

And yes, the language is confusing. You don't use "rifled" slugs in a rifled barrel, even though it sounds logical.

im not exactly sure what barrel it is. its a 20" 12guage. on the top of it close to the body it has a P stamped into it. on the left side it says -chambered for 2/3/4 and 3 in shells-
12 GA.-cylinder bore- made in usa

and i dont believe it has a choke. the choke is an adapter that screws onto the end of the barrel correct? if so,its not even threaded for one

**also,what does a choke do?**

"Choke" is a slight reduction in the barrel inner diameter near the muzzle. The purpose is to produce a smaller shot pattern with birdshot so that it will be effective at a longer range.

Older guns have fixed chokes. The restriction is part of the barrel and cannot be changed except by machining. Newer guns have interchangeable choke tubes.

The most common sizes -- open to tight -- are:
Cylinder -- no constriction
Skeet
Improved Cylinder
Modified
Full

You'll also see Light Modified, Extra-Full, and other variations.

With your barrel being Cylinder, it is safe to use with slugs.

"The Remington Guide to Shotguns" here has good information on guns and loads:

one more question.. do i need a choke to shoot slugs? or are they just good for bird-shot?, which is what i usually shoot. and would it need to be put on by a gunsmith since my barrel is not threaded or anything?

It sounds as though you have a Cylinder barrel that is not threaded for choke tubes. It is fine for slugs as is.

Try a few different brands and see which works best in your gun.
