DOES ANYONE HAVE LOW PRESSURE LOADS FOR 16 GA. WHAT WAD AND (FILLERS) DO YOU USE?

THANKS
JIM

Are you only interested in 7/8 oz. loads? And, what do you consider low pressure? What hull length? The 7/8 oz. loads using 2 3/4" hulls usually have much higher pressure and velocity than equivalent 1 oz. loads unless they use quite a bit of filler (like 1/4" fiber cards). Most people use a bean or puffed rice as a filler or 20 gauge felt cusions in the shotcup under the shot if they need one using 2 1/2" hulls. Most loads I have use the SG16 or TC16 wad.

PAPSHAL,
I AM USING 2 3/4 IN. SHELLS. I HAVE WINCHESTER POLYFORM, FEDERAL, CHEDDITE AND FIOCHHI HULLS. I WILL BE USING THEM FOR AN OLDER LEFEVER SXS. I WANT THE PRESSURES TO BE IN THE 7000-7500 PSI RANGE? I WANT TO SHOOT 7/8 OZ. FOR TARGETS AND DOVES. ALL THE RECIPES I HAVE SEEN ARE IN THE 8500-11000 PSI RANGE. I HAVE THE SG16 WADS.
I DON'T KNOW IF I SHOULD JUST ADD FILLER TO MY 1 OZ. LOADS. I AM NEW TO RELOADING. SOME OF THE POSTS HERE MAKE ME THINK THAT THIS IS NOT SAFE.

THANKS
JIM

I would not reduce a 1 oz. load and add filler, you're asking for problems if you do that. Shotshell reloading is not like rifle or handguns in that you can't swap components and it may not be safe to deviate from the published load. Verify sources before using a load.

Are you sure the chambers are 2 3/4" and not 2 9/16" or 2 1/2"?

I still think you'd be better off with a low pressure 1 oz. load as you'll have more choices. The 7/8 oz. loads produce some high pressures if you want velocities to be closer 1200 fps. I don't have many in my loading data that have pressures as low as you want with a 7/8 oz. load. You can also join the 16 reloading group. It's a group that pressure tests loads for older 16 gauges that need lower pressures. Contact me directly if you want the contact for the group.

Here are some 1 oz. loads published at chedditeprimers.com and in Hodgdon's 1996 manual (respectively):

Cheddite Hull 2 3/4"
1 oz. shot
20.5 grains Universal
ched209 Primer
sg-16 wad
1165 fps
7500 psi

Federal Hull 2 3/4"
1 oz. shot
21 grains Universal
fed 209A Primer
sg-16 wad
1165 fps
7400 psi

Jim,
Go to the Double Gun BBS here: http://www.gunshop.comIsClosed/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi and ask your question for low pressure 16 gauge loads. There is a group there that has had many low pressure loads tested in a ballistics lab. RWG is the contact for the group.

They have tested loads in a variety of hulls and with a variety of components.

For a modest fee (used for load testing) you can get access to their information.

It's $10 to join the group and you'll get more load data than you know what to do with. Russ is pretty quick to reply to email's, too.

Dang! That's less than I paid!

Russ just took off on a two week vacation so don't expect an early answer from him this time.

Thanks, to all. I got some great information. I e mailed Russ in regards to the 16 ga group. I guess I'll be waiting for a couple of weeks for his reply.

How long ago did you join? Maybe the prices have changed.

I got in at the beginning, back in 2001. The cost is no problem but I thought the fee was $15. It's little enough for the amount of information that is available. I've printed out all the sheets from Roster and now have half a notebook full.

Maybe it was $15, heck, I don't remember. I'm in total agreement, though, the cost is insignificant. I'd pay $50 for all that information and load data! And, I don't even care about low pressure loads having a modern gun.
