Hello everyone,

If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it.

I've been looking for a Model 12 to shoot and add to my collection. I've noticed a couple of older model 12's that don't include the shell size on the barrel. In trying to research the model, I've read that the earlier models were chambered for 2 9/16 for the 16's, 2 5/8 for the 12 and 2 1/2 for the 20 gauge.

If the barrel dosen't read 2 3/4, should one assume that the above applies? Does anyone know when the mfg. dates of the 1912 were chambered exclusively for the 2 3/4 shot shell?

Regards.

All 12 gauge model 12s have a 2 3/4in chamber except for the HD that has 3in......the small gauge guns had short chambers until the late 20s....most were marked on the barrel and/or by the serial number after they went to the 2 3/4in chamber....

Thanks for the reply gunut1.

I found a great book authored by Dennis Adler regarding the history of Winchester shotguns yesterday.

Chambers for the Model 12 are as follows:
12 gauge, 2-3/4-inch shell regardless of date of mfg.
12 gauge Heavy Duck Gun, 3-inch shell. Barrel inscribed. 3" Super-X.
16 gauge, 2-9/16-inch shell. Chambering changed to 2-3/4 inch shell in 1927.
20 gauge, 2-1/2-inch shell. Chambering changed to 2-3/4 inch shell jin 1925.
28 gauge, 2-7/8 inch shell, with 2-1/2 inch available on special order.
