Hello Folks,

I'm working on two JC Higgins model 20 pumps. One was my grandfather's pheasant gun out in western Nebraska. The main issue with it is that the bar on the side of the action tube has broken twice before (and "repaired" by a farmer friend of his). The other I found cheap and intended to use as a parts gun. Other than missing the forend and a few screws, it's intended use once back together is for home defense, since it's in better shape than I thought. The end of the barrel was bulged so I have had it cut off at 19" and crowned/radiused. Both are being taken apart and blued. These are the first shotguns I've worked on, having spent most of my time as a hobbyist gunsmith working on pistols, so I'm fumbling my way through.

I've checked Numrich's, but am not finding all I need. At the end of the magazine tube, there's supposed to be a large slotted and knurled "screw" that threads into the end of the magazine spring stop. Sorry if I've gotten my terminology wrong, but I expect y'all know what I'm looking for.

The part above, the magazine band lock screw, forend wood, and perhaps a new set of trigger/bolt group springs, and I'm set.

Thanks in advance for helping out a newbie.

It was made by High Standard and may be this model.

Most of the Mod20's I've worked on have been based off this High-Standard model

I've check both schematics: JC Higgins Model 20, and High-Standard Model 200.

The part I'm needing would be described as a large diameter, short, decorative screw that thread into the magazine cap (45). One of the guns has one, and the other had some sort of hardware store screw.

http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Pro ... catid=9649

The only thing holding up getting both guns finished now is that part. Could this screw have not been original? I've only handled two of these guns, and both having something in place, it seems to me that it would be stock. Why it's then not in the schematic, I don't know.

Thanks for your help.

Found a picture of another 20 on the Internet, and have attached it here. The slotted screw is what I need to find (and a forend).

Sorry for the additional posts. I'm just trying to provide as much info as I can find, in the hopes that someone might have what I'm looking for.

I found a High-Standard catalog that shows part #84 in the schematic below. However, in the same document, there is no part #84 listed in the parts list. This seems to be the case in other models schematics as well.

Some of the model 20s used the screw and some used a flat cap that had screws in the side of mag. tube to hold it in. There are at least 2 different end caps not counting the one with the screw slot.

High Standard is still in business, and located in Houston, Texas. You might give them a call, and ask for Alan Aronstein. They have a lot of NOS parts, and just might have what you need.

Use a mossberg mag tube and forend. You'll need a dremel for the forend but it'll work fine. Here's my model 20...Image

You did that to a JC Higgins model 20? That's amazing. Can you explain how you did so, with what components?

Thanks!

Thanks alot!!! It's nice to hear, this was my first firearm project (I have a feeling it won't be my last). I started with a family heirloom so my goal was to make a tactical shotgun without any smithing to the gun so I could always return the wood and have my old shotgun to pass on.ImageImage

ImageImageImageImageI used mossberg accessories, a mako tri rail forend and adjustable foregrip, a uag pistol grip and stock mount, a command arms Ar stock and cheek piece, and a black aces tactical quad rail. The forend and stock took some tweaking with a dremel but easy enough. The quad rail fits perfect.

Searching for another part. I need a "spring" that presses against the pin that holds the trigger assembly in. Searched all of the regular places, and no luck.

Might something else work? I understood that this gun was also similar to a Winchester model. Perhaps a spring for another make might work?
