What is the difference between these two? Other than the chamber length difference, are there any design/cosmetic differences I should be aware of? I was told that the 11-87 was a newer design (making it better supposedly) than the 1100, but I thought they were almost the same thing.

The only "major" difference is the ability to use 2 3/4" and 3" shells in the same gun, the nuts and bolts of the thing is if you need to use 3" hulls to hunt with! The two guns share about 98% of the parts with each other and I wouldn't claim the one gun is superior to the other, it all depends if you need that extra 1/4" of shell capacity. Major differences that I know of are the receiver, barrel(chamber), mag tube(stainless), and gas cylinder. For target and most hunting the 2 3/4" shells are about all you need.

The 1100 is mainly a target gun while the 11-87 is designed for hunting. Although you could use an 11-87 for targets and the 1100 for hunting.

At the gun shop they have an 1100 that is called premium-what does this mean? Are they just throwing that out or does it mean something? Thanks.

Are you sure that isn't an 11-87 Premier?

Well thats what it says. Whatever-click the link to see. They probably saw the wooden stock and called it premier.

I'm not sure but it could be a 1100 made just before Remington came out with the 1187, in other words a stock 1100 with some fancy wood with the name premier stuck on the side of it(I think they did that in the mid-eighties).
They really don't give much info other then the gun's a 1100 with a 28" barrel and it would be a smart move to find out if it has choke tubes or a fixed choke barrel and the age.
Dang gun could be a stock 30 year old 1100 like my dad's or a 15 year old 1187 skeet like mine, lousy picture and not nearly enough information provided to even conceder buying it.

1100s have been around since the early 60s. As mentioned before if shooters wanted to shoot three inch shells they had to buy a Magnum model which Rem said to shoot only 2 3/4 or 3 inch mags in. Shooters found that by putting a regular barrel on their magnum receiver they usually (sometimes it did not work perfectly) could shoot regular 2 3/4 inch shells. Remington redesigned the gas system with and extra gas blow valve so to speak (they call it compensated) that allowed a shooter to shoot most 2 3/4 and three inch shells in the same gun. It appears Remington had plans to have the 11-87 take over, but as years went by that did not happen. The 11-87 target models are 2 3/4 inch only. Deer models, law enforcement, and the target barrels did not have the extra gas system and have a limited range of shells that will function based on the anticipated use of the gun. Target barrels should only shoot the lighter loads, deer barrels the heavier loads. I have never seen an 11-87 fixed choke, but there might be some. New 1100s have screw in chokes, but the older ones were fixed. Newer 1100s have a heftier extractor like and 11-87. As mentioned before the 11-87 has a stainless magazine tube vs regular steel on the 1100. As time went on the target models of the 11-87 were discontinued in favor of the 1100. The new 1100s have the same twist and turn mag tube keeper as the 11-87. Remington says the barrels do not interchange. I guess from a cosmetic standpoint the 11-87 had a different checkering style and pattern and did not have the white diamond that was characteristic of the older 1100s. I think your planned useage would be the most important element of making your decision on which one to have. One last thing, Synthetic stocks and forearms will interchange between 12 ga 1100s and 11-87s.
