I know the season is not very close but I enjoy looking at what everyone shoots just for kicks. Name your top 5 steel waterfowl loads and list a reason why your number 1 pick is in its place. Here is my 5.

Remington Nitro Steel 3in 1 1/8oz #2
Heavy Metal 3in 1 1/4oz #3
Remington Sportsman 3in 1 1/4oz #2
Winchester Drylock 3in 1 1/4oz #2
Federal Premium 2 3/4in 1 1/4 #3

I like the remington nitro steel 3in 1 1/8oz #2 because it patterns well, hits ducks hard, and hits where Im pointing and thats where I have my most confidence.

Fun question:

In decreasing order:

If Lead were legal: Blue Magic shell loaded with 1¼ High Antimony #5s, 540 Powder, F114 Winchester Wad @ 1,330 fps.

Cost Not a Factor: Kent Impacts in #5 Tungsten-Matrix loaded at 1¼ ounces and 1,400 fps.

Swan Stopper: Kent Impacts in #3 Tungsten-Matrix with 1 3/8 ounces at 1,375 fps.

Cost-conscious soft non-toxics: 1¼ ounces of #2 Bismuth (Bismaxx) at 1,400 fps.

Sub-Gauge: (Teal) 1 ounce Kent Impact #5 at 1,350 fps, (late season) 1 1/8 ounces of #5 Impact at 1,360 in a 3" shell.

With steel-capable guns:

Kent Fasteel 1 1/8 ounces of #2 steel at 1,560 fps

The first steel load that made me smile: Winchester Xpert 1 1/8 ounces of #2 steel at 1,550.

On-Deck (I have these in my possession but have not shot them yet):
Fiocchi Tundra 2 3/4", 1¼ ounces of #4 TCL (9.7 g/cc) at 1,340 fps
Hevi-shot Hevi-steel (9 g/cc) #2 1 1/8 ounces at 1,550 fps

The only load I shot from the time Winchester introduced them until last year was Winchester Drylok 12 gauge 3" - BB's for geese and swan and #3 for ducks. Last season I traded for a Benelli M-2, bought some extended CRIO choke tubes (decoy and passing) and started patterning. I patterned Kent, WIN X-Pert, and Remington Hyper-velocity (and the Drylok) - the Drylok is still the best, with the Kent very close. Guess I will keep shooting the Drylok and buy Kents too when I need more.

Top 5 steel loads?

Federal Ultrashok 3" 1 1/4 oz #1
Federal Ultrashok 3.5" 1 1/2 oz #1
Winchester Drylock 3" 1 1/4 oz #3
Federal Speedshok 3" 1 1/8 oz #2
Estate 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz BB

I list these loads based on pattern consistency, quality, availability, and price. I use many other loads, as I am a "try it, pattern it, buy it on sale" kind of guy. I'll stock up on any load that works.

Now if we were to throw tungsten loads into the mix...

Remington hevi-shot 3.5" 1 3/4 oz #4
Winchester xtended hi density 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz 2's (my favorite snow goose load)
Remington Wingmaster HD 3" 1 1/4 oz #2 (my favorite load to shoot through the citori)
Federal heavyweight 3.5" 2's
Hevi-shot Dead coyote

#1 Remington Hevi-Shot #4 3.5". No longer available but they really had knockdown power.
#2 Black Cloud #2 3.5" 1.5oz Some don't like but they pattern perfect in my gun with LM Briley
#3 Winchester Supreme #2 3.5" 1.5oz Before BC came out these were my go to shell.
#4 Winchester Drylok #1 3.5" 1 9/16oz to me these where the original "good" steel shotgun shell
#4 Fiochhi #2 3.5 1 9/16 1470fps bought some last year at Final Flight when I needed some extra shells and I was impressed.

I'd go with Black Cloud 3", 1 1/4, 3's. It just knocked their beaks in the dirt...

All that stuff I bought from Wal mart a few years ago on clearance for 4 to 6 bucks a box. Still have some left too.
