A buddy of mine came across a gun that was his dad's. It is stamped with:
THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO EST 1870
NORTH HAVEN, CONN. USA MODEL 5512GA
also:
THE ORIGINAL MARLIN GOOSE GUN 3 INCH MAGNUM CHAMBER
and:
25667477

we were wondering when it was made, what is the value even though he wants to hold on to it, what kind of bullets to use for it (he is not familiar with shotguns nor am I), and a little history on it thank you.

Can tell that your fire arms education is sadly lacking. A shotgun does not fire bullets, it fires shot shells and the gauge is usually marked on the gun barrel. Your gun is a 12 gauge and it has a 3 inch chamber. The complete description of your gun as posted in the Blue Book of Gun Values reads as follows.
Marlin shotguns bolt action.
Model 55 Goose Gun. Simular to Model 55 except 12 gauge only, 36 inch full choke barrel, 3 inch chamber, 2 shot magazine, leather carrying strap and detachable swivels, walnut stock, with rubber recoil pad weighs 8 pounds. Manufactured 1962 to 1996. Values:
100%-$235, 98%-$185, 95%-$145, 90%-$125, 80%-$115, 70%-$100 and 60%-$90.
The percentage figures refer to the amount of the original finish remaining on the metal and wood and assumes that the gun is in a safe mechanical condition to be fired. Sorry but there is no serial number-year made table for this gun in my reference book. Can only tell you that it was made sometime between 1962 and 1996.

If you are going to be shooting deer or some other large animal, then you might need 00 (Double Aught Buckshot). If you are going to be hunting birds, then you'll need smaller shot. Ask for advice at the place you buy ammunition.
