Today I completed my first instruction with John Greenwell of Confident Shotgunning. Per John's website located at, http://www.confidentshotgunning.com/, "John Greenwell is a National Sporting Clays Association Level III Shooting Instructor with over seven years and 2,000+ hours of one-on-one teaching experience and an active NSCA "Master Class" competitor".

I found John online. I first went to the Arizona Sporting Clays Association to seek instructors located at: http://www.azsportingclays.com/instructors.htm. From my understanding, there are only 71 Level III instructors in the United States, of which 2 are in Arizona. My friend had taken instruction from the other Level III instructor, Russ Gunderson, and highly recommended him. I selected John Greenwell just because he seemed more active with the number of registered targets he shoots each year, which is >2600/year since 2001!

John and I met at my local course, Ben Avery Clay Target Center, http://www.azgfd.gov/ctc2/index.html at 9am. John started off by asking a little about myself and what I hoped to accomplish in today's lesson. He also asked if at the end if I could provide him feedback to see if we reached my goals. I informed John that I have been a club shooter for several years, and that I would like to become more consistent and begin NSCA tournaments next year. He asked if there were specific targets I would like to work on. Most definitely, the low, fast shondell on station 2, the tower, and dropping birds. John informed me that he would begin by watching me shoot.

Off to the executive course we went. He picked a station with both a crosser and an outgoer. After a couple of singles, we moved quickly to the main course. We worked on my 'issues'. We worked on shooting different methods. We worked on shooting the same target at different break points, foot position, hold points, etc...My hour long session ended up a two hour session.

I have taken instruction when I first started out and was hitting 25%. I took instruction with OSP, Vicki Ash about 2 years ago when I was hitting approximately 50-60%. In my opinion, John exemplifies a true professional. Like most good instructors, John works with the style of shooting that you bring to the table. John picked up what my brain was doing in relation to my body. John provided excellent working points. John made the explanations simple and easy to understand. With every suggestion, John would provide an explanation on why and what he was suggesting. John was able to tell me some things I did not even realize I was doing. IMHO, my instruction was more then worth the dollar cost and he exceeded my expectations.

I will be practicing some of the things John has brought to my attention, and will be taking a follow-up lesson early next year with my son.
