Hello,
my Grandfather recently gave me a Mossberg Model 185K-A. It's a 20 gauge bolt action shotgun, has a C-LECT choke on it. Has a 2 round clip underneath the barrel and holds one in the chamber for a total of 3 rounds. The gun is in really great condition, Grandpa says he never fired it, but obviously it has been used prior to him owning it. Anyways if anyone could give me a ballpark of what they thought it was worth I would really appreciate it. I don't think I'm gonna sell it due to the sentimental value but I'm still curious ya know? Anyways thanks in advance for anybody's help!!

They seem hard-pressed to bring $150, in pristine condition.

This one, F/S, closed for $139: http://www.gunsamerica.com/classifieds/ ... 36515.aspx

The true worth of yours is in it's history & sentimental value.

Around here $100-200. I bought a Mossberg 390K awhile back in 16 gauge in great shape for $100. I have shot grouse, pheasants, clay pigeons and ducks with it. I have since been told not to shoot steel shot through it due to the c-lect choke. It's a fun unique gun and I don't worry about scratching or breaking it.

@ Criscokid, Yep thats pretty much identical in wear, and your right its value is mostly the fact that he gave it to me...Thank you both for your responses y'al been very helpful, o and @ Chauncy, if not steel shot then what is the best type of shot for it?I heard that lead shot isnt allowed to be shot in all places.... I wanna keep it in great shape, its the first gun ive ever owned, ive already cleaned and oiled it....and I heard due to the choke I wont be able to shoot slugs out of it....is that true? Can I still shoot Buck shot etc? Thanks again guys!

Steel shot is required for waterfowl hunting or other specifically designated wildlife areas and it is policy on some ranges. Lead is still by far the most used load.Check your local regulations.
My understanding is that steel having less give than lead can snag or hang up the the C-lect choke tearing it off or breaking the pedals that make up the choke. Slugs I'm not sure on. I would think that the bismuth shot may work because it is soft, but it is expensive. You could call Mossberg or ask a Gunsmith for clarification.

Foster-type slugs (non-sabots) are doable with the C-lect choke on the most open (IC ?) setting ONLY - but zeroing may be problematic w/o sights.

Mandatory steel shot hunting areas are usually delineated in each state's hunting regs, and the US waterfowl regs - usually wetlands bordered by an easily-definable line, like a road or body of water.

AFAIK, the only game that steel shot use is mandatory for hunting is migratory game birds, aka ducks, geese & other waterfowl - but some states may have restrictions - again, please check/do homework.

I shoot them from my C-Lect choke. Even at Modified. I usually shoot a 10" gong at 100 yds with it.

Shoot it, Enjoy it, then pass it along to the next generation!
