I like the 930 SPX, but don't like the high sights, or the fact that it has no screw in choke. The 930 JM Pro 22" barrel seems to have most of what I'm looking for, but I'm wondering what you guys think of it for a HD gun considering the extra 4" of length?

It would probably be fine but I wouldn't want one that long. What about a regular 930 with the 18" barrel? If I ever get the wherewithal and hankering at the same time I'll probably end up getting a 930 field/security combo or whatever the hell they call it.

I was thinking about that too. The only issue I saw there was the 18" bbl. did not have the screw in chokes, which I would like.

I have a 930 SPX and the sights are fine for defense. Probably not ideal for bird hunting though. It sounds like you might want an 870 or Mossberg with two barrels.

Last time I saw anything about it, 00 buckshot doesn't really like chokes much and that is the load for HD. Of course you could hunt birds without chokes, but that other long barrel with chokes would be better. I picked up a Mossberg 500 with both 18" and loooong barrel for around $225 some time back.

Mossberg combo, $525 shipped, sold the 28" barrel for $160 and I had Invector chokes added to the 18 1/2" barrel for $65, bought the +3 Nordic tube for $75, Meprolight Tritium sight for $30 and have a total investment of $535 and feel it is the best set-up for me.

PC, Could you expand on that statement a bit? What were you patterning like and with what type of chokes? My reason for wanting one barrel with a screw in choke was simply to make that one shorter barrel as versatile as possible. I very well may have a longer barrel for other purposes. I'm assuming I could always default to a cylinder screw in choke if nesessary for the buckshot. thx, Bill

You may want to do some searching on here about the choke issue. I've never patterned Federal LE132 00 through a choke. I've just always run it through a cyliner bore barrel. Others may have more words of wisdom on that issue than me. But the Flite Control 00 buck is what you should use for HD. Good load.

Another good option to consider for sure.

The JM Pro does already have a nordic extension, and also has some chromed internal parts, but I'm not really sure how important they would be compared to non-chromed in standard models.

As someone above said, it sounds like the 930 combo is the shotgun you would want. It comes with a 28" hunting barrel with 3 chokes, and the 18" home defense barrel. A Nordic extension tube is about $70 extra. Choate and others are cheaper.

The chrome parts in the JM pro is intended to increase the longevity of the gun ease cleaning. Thing HIGH round counts. I bought mine specifically for 3-gun.

My 930's have been nothing but reliable, but if I was buying a gun specifically for home defense it would probably be one of the Mossberg Maverick 18" barrel pump shotguns. Cheap and reliable, and always left at home for the family, even if I'm off shooting with my 930's.

Thanks for all the insights guys, it's going to be a 930 for sure-(no pump). No matter what I get, I will probably have to do a few changes to get exactly what I want. Who has the best prices online? Is it worth waiting for a place like Dick's to run a sale?

The JM Pro's can be found elsewhere... when in stock.
