I need to get supplies on hand to start loading my own. I'm not anchored to the 1250 fps, but I am trying to get enough energy in the load to cycle the action on my Browning Auto-5 and eject the spent shells.

I will be using an ounce of 8 1/2 shot, Win AA hulls, Win 209 primers, CB 1100-12 wads... this is a 16 yard trap load, just shooting for fun.

my search has uncovered powders:

700-X
American Select
e3
Extra-Lite
Green Dot
PB
and Red Dot.

(seems to me like I used Red Dot back in 1970 or so)

Give me the pros / cons and your observations / recommendations. Is there some other new powder or wad I should look into?

TIA

Promo can be substituted for Red Dot BY WEIGHT, not volume. Use your scale (gotta have a scale, no way around that) to see if your jug of Promo is dropping like Red Dot or if its more or less. Try the next bushing, up or down, find the bushing that works for your jug. Use a Alliant Reloading Guide or their website to determine the correct powder drop for your load.

I'm shooting 1 ounce loads using Rem hulls, DR XL-1 wads, 17.6 gr (+/- .2 gr)of Clay Dot, #8 shot, and NS209 primers. My chronograph puts them around 1225fps Broke a 98 with them recently.

I have also used Win209 primers and CB1100 wads with this load. Soon I'll be switching to Fed 209a primers so my powder weight may be adjusted down some.

This load seems to be very popular with some of the more learned folks on here. After using it I can see why.

++ on ring3's load. I load essentially the same load, except I use NS209 primers. This is my 16 - 22 yd. trap and dove hunting load (when I use the 12 ga. for dove, which is not often). It's great!

IMHO, all your powder selections look good except X-Lite (too much pressure for 1 oz. @ 1250fps.).

In a AA or Rem. hull, any of the rest will work good. Go to the alliant web site and start digging.

This is absolutely true, but ExtraLite works fantastic for a 7/8 load which will crush birds way on out there.

I have been using the Extra-Lite for a while now in my Cynergy and like it for 16 yard trap.
12 ga Win AA HS Hulls
Win 209 Primers
CB-1100-12 Wads
~16.9 Grains Extra-Lite (been playing around with lesser charges)
Alliant Claims Apx. 10,080 PSI and 1200 FPS
