I had the curiosity to learn from Richard the way he shoots!

I sent him an email :

Dear Richard,> > I know that you are concentrating on your Olympic > goal but if you have a little time I would like to ask you about your lead picture.> > We have a controversial thread on a forum so, here is my question:> > After you have inserted the gun and you have established the target gun relationship, your eyes> are focusing on the target and with the peripheral> vision on the gun OR you move your eyes from the target ahead to where you will hit the target?> > In other words you keep your eyes entirely on the target while shooting or you move your eyes where> you suppose to hit the bird!> > I wish you all the best and good luck at the Olympics !> > thank you> > Bill

THIS IS WHAT I GOT:

Dead Bill, I am currently training in the Olympic village, but very quickly, to answer your question... I keep my eyes 100% on the target, seeing the barrel in my peripheral vision. For your info, I have NO BEAD on my gun either to stop me from looking at the gun. Regards Richard.

The conclusions are yours!

Assuming this is legit, I find the response interesting.

Excellent!!! {hs#

Perhaps this is an up-and-comer we don't know about yet? Or perhaps more likely is our illustrious Shotgun Coach has trouble spelling -- in which case as XS pointed out, it does bring into question the legitimacy of said question and response...

Richard Faulds is probably the person in question. English Olympic trap and sport shooter.

He must have some talent as he won the gold medal in the 2000 Olympics in double trap.

Izzy -- I think most of the previous replies about "Foulds" were sarcastic ones.

Personally, I think I'm going to treat these threads from here on out the way Mr. Blakeley advocates shooting longer clays ... I'm going to let my eyes move forward to another spot in space. :s

ShotgunJoke. In ClayShootingUSA magazine, November/December Journal No 21, pages 44 and 45, Masterclass, Long Crossers with Richards FAULDS, Richard says:-

QUOTE:- {If your gunfit and mount are correct,your eyes should do all the work. On a short range target it is usually sufficient to lock your eyes onto the leading edge of the clay to hit it. As distance increases a conscious gap needs to be established. Lock onto the clay briefly to give your brain the vital data on line and speed then look out ahead of it to where you want to place your shot and fire. Your gun will follow your eyes naturally. Want more lead? Look further ahead.}

So, ShotgunJoke, I don't expect you to accept this, so tomorrow I will get you a link to the ClayShooting USA archives and you can pull the article up youself OR I will fax you a copy OR e mail you a copy, or anyone else that doubts Richards methodology. So maybe after all, Richards, Jon Kruger, Nash Buckingham, me and others have found the secret to successful shotgunning. Perhaps the shotgun really should shoot where you look? :D

Over to you ShotgunJOKE.

Coach, good post. Seems to make sense. Focus on the bird.

Thanks.
