Thinking about buying a after market choke for my new a400 xtreme. What choke patterns the best from your experiences? All my friends tell me to get Pattern Master. Are they any good?

The constriction of the choke has a lot more to do with how it patterns than the name stamped on the side of the choke tube. So the real question is "What do you want the new choke tube to do that your existing choke(s) don't do?"

Save your money and buy your wife something nice. I've done a lot of paper patterning with the Beretta HP chokes and 2 of the so-call premier chokes. Nothing beat the HP IC choke out to 35 yards and the HP MOD choke out to 50 yards.

BTW - I've sold the 2 name brand chokes.

I put the IC Optima HP choke in my A400 Xcel Sporting the first day I bought it and I haven't taken it out yet. It seems to really smoke the clays if I do my job. I've gotten some hard breaks on targets out to 45-50 yards with the IC and 1oz #8 Gun Club loads.

Asking which brand of choke has a better pattern is like asking if one tire is more round than another. They all pattern the same. Save your money.

shotguns are very low tech. Start w/ the shell.....it has roundish shot....not really round. The sizes of the pellets are close , but never the same. The way the pellets stack up in the shot cup is different , shell to shell.

Chokes are different by thousandths of an inch....like 5 thousandths--of an INCH.

And yet , despite all this randomness , and lack of exactitude , any shell , any choke , etc , is BETTER than our ability to shoot it in the right place.

The only way to "buy" better shooting is the same way one gets to Carnegie Hall....practice , practice , practice.

I printed this out when Sera posted it about the 50th time ago whenever a choke question gets asked, and taped it right above my computer --- I re-read it every time I'm tempted to press the button and "try out" a set of Extreme Ti chokes.

:D

Wrong, its like asking which tire has better traction. We are not talking about the looks of the choke we are talking about how well it performs.

Go buy some of every make there is on the market, try ALL of them at the pattern board and decide which work the best for ya.

Easy enough to do ain't it

After wasting much money (what I'm best at in this game) I currently only buy aftermarket chokes when the factory one's aren't available in a constriction I would like to have (notice I didn't say need).

I have reached the conclusion that to a large extent if you're having a good day chokes don't matter, and if you're having a bad day chokes don't help.

What does "patterning the best" mean? A choke is nothing without a shell, so you might as well as what shell patterns "the best" as well.

Ahhh I dont even want to start getting into the, "this is nothing without that conversation". If thats the case i would have to say a shell is nothing without the pellet and then wait the pellets is nothing without the wad and so on.

If you don't have any definition of what "better patterning" is to you, then no answer is remotely possible from anyone.

try a few, who cares what others think, it is your money right?

the stock chokes are good though, they just have a tendency to come loose during shooting, and what sucks is when you are getting in a rhythm at a station and have to stop to tighten a choke, pisses me off.
