I'm looking for a value, fair to the buyer and seller for a Loyola sxs 20ga.

Older shotgun with moderate wear on stock, receiver and barrel bluing are in very good shape.

I'm also interested in what these shotguns sell for new.

Never heard of it before... and that's probably telling.

Who's the importer/manufacturer?

Ahhhh! Ok, you've given me something to work with :)

It's a cheap (very cheap) Eibar Spain manufacturer double, most likely imported by JANA of Denver in the early 1970's (look for their importation marks).

I hope I'm not disappointing you, but your gun it worth perhaps $200 TOPS.

Long out of business, but I did find a reference online from someone who said they paid $100 for one in 1972. Take that for what it's worth...

A 'cheap' gun yes, but not necesesarilly cheaply made considering other Spanish guns of that era. That gun in 20 ga would sell on GB very quickly for $250.

Not so fast, gentlemen. Lucio Loyola, like most Spanish shotgun makers, made guns to every price point.

If the gun in question is a plain Jane box lock then value is likely in the $300 range. OTOH if the gun is a highly ornate side lock then value may be several thousand dollars.

Value the gun – not the name.

Lucio Loyola and Jana rang a bell and I had to go look at my gun data.

In spring of this year a minty Lucio Loyola .410 box lock, like new condition, moderate engraving, Jana import, went at auction for just a hair over $1000.

Gentlemen, I have the gun that drsfmd referred to being bought in 1972 for $100.00. It is a 20 gauge boxlock that I bought new in Minnesota when I was 14 years old. They were imported by Jana but mine has no importers name on it. It just says Lucio Loyola. I still have the gun. For that $100.00 I got a walnut stock, double triggers, extractors, double locking lugs without a pierced bottom, greener style crossbolt and basic engraving.
I live back in Canada now and 2 months ago I bought a Loyola 12 gauge 7 pin sidelock. This gun was imported by Trust Eibarres. The gun is from 1968 and is like new. I paid more than $100.00 this time. If I could find a nice 16 gauge and .410 here I would snap them up PDQ. As far as how long Loyola made guns, I read somewhere that someone had one from the 40's. A pic of my sidelock is below.

Doubleslover,

Congratulations on your Loyola side lock; that’s an outstanding gun.

Purely FYI, Trust Eibarres is a Spanish ammunition manufacturer and a player in the sporting goods trade generally. They have been a major sponsor of shooting events in Spain (especially live pigeon shoots) for decades. During the height of live pigeon shooting competitions, competitors would go to Trust Eibarres and order custom guns. Trust Eibarres was a retailer rather than a gun maker (similar to Orvis here in the US), and would subcontract the custom gun order to a true gun maker.

Most of this custom work seems to have gone to Lucio Loyola – for good reason as he did very nice work indeed. I have seen one Trust Eibarres gun that was made by Pedro Arrizabalaga, but the vast majority of Trust Eibarres guns I have seen came from the shop of Lucio Loyola.

I have had three Trust Eibarres side locks; a 12 gauge pigeon gun made in 1946, a 12 gauge medium game gun made in the 1960s, and a 16 gauge medium game gun also made in the 1960s. All were very fine guns indeed. The only one I have left is the 1960s medium game gun, and I’m in the process of having that gun restocked with a killer piece of wood.

It’s a pleasure to meet someone else who knows and appreciates the work of Lucio Loyola. I’m also happy to learn you are in Canada, as that means we won’t likely be bidding against each other for any Loyola guns that come up for sale!
