Hi yall i need some help, i think i may have got burnt so here goes....

i bought a JC Higgins 410 bolt action model 101 for 125.00 everything seamed smooth and in working order, UNTIL i got it home where i could fire it, it shoots great BUT the bolt "binds up" bad if you put ANY pressure on it(mostly side pressure) it has plenty of oil and glides back and forth great IF you just pull and push without a shell in front, when you pit the magazine in and try to run a shell the shells pushing up on the bolt cause it to drag/bind pretty bad(you can hear it drag) and feel it. SO any ideas on what it might be? does it need a new bolt (if i could find one) ??? thanks for any help.....

Not quite sure what model you have, the cross reference listing lists two J.C. Higgins Models 101s, a Model 101.1 and a Model 101.24 as well as several Sears 101.xxx guns all made by Savage or Stevens. I think you need to take the gun to a good gunsmith for an examination and checkout. You may have a worn bolt, a worn receiver or a bad magazine. And yes, parts can be found.

Try Goggling gunsmiths. There might be one closer or one that accepts mail in repairs.

also i did find that there was some sharp edges on the bottom of the bolt where it slides against the spring wire at the bottom of the recever so i used my dremel and LIGHTLY rounded the edges on the bolt and it seams to slid a little smoother now, il have to test it out later to see for sure....

Your gun is what I call a "Store Brand Name" shotgun. That is a gun made by a major maker (and after 1945) for and sold by a wholesale sporting goods dealer, a retail chain store (Sears, Roebuck & Company) or a local seller who chose the name to go on the gun. A J.C. Higgins Model 101.1380 (or Sears Model number) not actually a model number but a catalog number that Sears used to identify a gun, who made it, what type it is, gauge and so on, cross references to a Stevens Model 58 or a Springfield Model 18. Both guns are identical mechanically. Springfield is a name Stevens used on their less expensive guns. While the guns are identical, Springfield named guns are less well finished and have hardwood stocks instead of walnut. Sorry but I can't give you any dates when the gun might have been made as there is no published information for that. Be careful removing metal because once it has been removed, it can't be put back.
