Post subject: Briley Companion Tubes Bore Diameter
PostPosted: Tue Nov 02, 2004 6:49 pm
Hi,
What gives? I just received my first set of Briley Companion tubes (20 ga./INV+). The bore is marked .616 and the choke is marked .610 (marked skeet). Both seem very tight for INV+. According to Browning, INV+ 20 ga. barrels are .630 bore. Should I be concerned, or is the .006 difference all that matters? Briley told me the range in 20 ga. Companion tube bores is from .615 to .625. Should I be concerned that mine are on the tight side?

What are yours marked?

My Briley Ulitimate UltraLite 20 gauge tubes are .615" and I use .610" chokes. I had a .9875 average in 20 gauge this year. I don't think you need to worry.

Winders,
The .006 isn't on the tight side of what is ideal for a 20 ga. skeet constriction (especially for someone who averages .88-.92)?

Thanks for your replies.

I'm not winders but .006 is not too tight for .20 ga skeet. Nominal measurement for a 20 ga. skeet choke is .005. You'll never be able to detect that difference of .001.

For reference, most machinists will hold tolerances to .001 so your choke is within production tolerances.

BTW, choke really isn't measured by the amount of constriction. You really have to pattern the gun and see what you have. Certain guns with certain shells will produce a skeet pattern with as little as .001 choke. Change the shell and that same gun might need .007 to get the same pattern.

Sometimes I shoot skeet with my 391 and its factory skeet choke. In case you aren't aware Beretta skeet chokes actually flare out toward the muzzle...they are more open than cylinder. With my reloads, this choke in this gun hits the targets harder than my Perazzi with chokes that are matched to the bore and have .005 constriction.

Put your gun on paper and see if you like the patterns.
