i just read the back of a .45 ACP box of ammo. and it says under application
"Thin skinned game such as whitetail deer and boar."
whitetail deer? i never thought of the .45 ACP as a deer load. :? i do remember reading that you cant hunt deer with a .22, i am thinking you would need a rifle for the .45 application. has anyone ever tried this? this is crazy...

Though I don't doubt it would prove lethal under certain circumstances, it isn't what I am going to use unless nothing else is available., I would rather use a bow.
There are states where a .22 is not legal to hunt deer with, I think Colorado won't allow it. But it isn't uncommon to use a Swift or 22.250 on deer here, even up to 200 pound animals---right load and bullet, he will never move again.
In fact, my oldest borrowed my XTR BB 22.250 and took three deer week before last.
Oh, and boar--not me. I do carry a .41 Rem-Mag in a Blackhawk, but is no where similar to a .45 ACP.

The .41 is nasty and miserable to shoot, at least the way I have it loaded. .44 is OK

The .44 Rem is a hand cannon. I've got a Marlin 1894 chambered in .44 Rem Mag that I've used several times on whitetails and Muleys. It works pretty good as long as they're within 150 yards or so. I do prefer my .270 though for deer.
If I had to survive and had only the .45acp as a firearm I promise you that I'll be able to kill deer with it. I may end up chasing the wounded b@$t@rd across three counties but I'll kill it eventually.
The .22LR is the weapon of choice for poachers. A good headshot with one of them will kill any sized deer just as dead as pa's old ought-six will. I don't recommend using the .22 for any large game. It's illegal in nearly all states anyway for use on deer. I know that in SD the minimum cartridge allowed for deer is the 22 Swift which I think is a bit weeney anyway. The 22-250 is a fine round for deer though. Even the .223 Rem works well as long as you put the bullet where it counts.

Minimum deer cartridge in Connecticut is .243 or 6mm. Shotgun 12, 16, or 20 gauge slug only (no buckshot). No handgun deer hunting although I also have a Marlin 1894 and don't think a ranger would care if the .44 were shot from it or my Ruger Redhawk.

For using rifles for big game in CA the reg book says Quote: ...may only be taken by rifles using centerfire cartridges with softnose or expanding bullets
So I could go elk hunting with a .17 Rem. Our DFG is so f'd up.

The .243 is plenty to kill a deer with! I know many of my relatives kill deer cleanly with their "weenie" 22-250s...

I don't see why a 45ACP with expanding bullets wouldn't kill a deer at 25, or even 50+ yards, but it wouldn't be my first choice as a deer hunting gun.

A 45 "might" kill a deer at that range. Deer are a bit tougher than people to kill. It would definately wound it but probably not be an instant kill unless it was a clean head shot.

That deer is gonna run and run,it would probablly kill it,but the adreneline would be so high he'd run and run.Be readt to track for a long way most likely, shot placement is everything.

FYI guest a 44's diameter is .429 and a 45 is .452 so a 44 is actually smaller than a 45. Second I have used a 45 colt 200 gr hp (ashcan by corbon) at 1000 fps out of a ruger black hawk and killed multiple deer that same load could be used in a 45 acp and its available through corbon. Also as a 185 dpx at over 1000 fps would kill white tails I am sure. If you where using handloads I am sure a 250gr hornaday bullet can be driven 850-900 fps safely from a 5 inch 1911 and that also would be a good deer stopper. The possibilities are endless if you can place your shot in the heart or lungs a 45 will do the trick just fine. You don't need a 500 s&w to kill whitetail deer. I have used 180 gr 357's at 1200 fps to kill deer and you can be damn sure anything a 180 grain .38 diameter bullet traveling 1200 fps will do a .452 diameter 230 grain bullet doing 1000 fps. can do just as well if not better.

In NC you can use a hand gun to hunt deer but it has to have at least a 6" barrel and I believe at least 30 cal.

Once carried a 1911 as a sidearm and it will kill a deer no problem. I have taken a hog with a 10mm about 180 pound sow, and she didnt even twitch. Shot a whitetail doe with a .357 158 gr. silvertip from about 75 yards, she went down but I shot again just to finish the job. Mostly use a .44 mag. these days but wouldnt count out the .45 if you know how to hit with it.There are a whole bunch of old school military guys that will get a giggle out of worrying about the .45's stopping power. Va. has a Regulation listed that states" Cartridges must be .23 caliber or larger and have a manufactures rating of 350ft lbs muzzle energy or more."

What brand of ammo are you talking about? If its winchester white box, then its practice ammo. It states the application guide with three catagories: Hunting, Target/Range, and Personal Protection. Notice the pictures under where it says "usage". Now look at the two ends of the box its got one of those pictures on it, the one I'm lookin at has the Target/Range picture, which I'm guessing is also on your box.
