I recently aquired a 22" barrel for my Winchester 1200. The guy who sold it to me said that it was a slug barrel.

It has rifle sights and looks like a slug barrel but says "FULL" right under the manufacturer stamp on the barrel.

Can I put slugs through it?

Any help is appreciated.

Have the barrel mic'd and you'll find out.

Sounds to me like someone cut down a full choke barrel making it a cylinder barrel.

Take it to your gunsmith and ask.

Good Luck

Jeff has it right, as usual! :D

You may be able to take it to a local shotgun club if one is closer. They'll usually have the tools there to be able to help also.

It doesn't really matter whether it's been cut off or if it is indeed full choke, you can still fire regular '"Foster" style rifled slugs or Brenneke slugs out of it. Many will tell you you'll get better accuracy with a more open choke. Maybe yes, maybe no. Some of the most accurate slug shooters I've ever seen were full or modified choked. Concentricity of the choke to the bore is more important to accuracy than choke constriction itself.

You could always cut open a slug round and see if it
falls through the barrel. If it is a normal full choke,
the slug will pass through with no problem. If this
is a turkey gun with an extra full then there could
be problems. I doubt that it is an extra full turkey
gun but, the experiment with the cut open slug will
answer all questions.

My 30" full choke barrel on my 870 shoots a lot better than my slug barrel. It might just be me feeling better sighting down that long tube?

Ok, I didn't know that slugs were that small in comparison to the barrel.

I was under the impression that they were like a rifle and very tight.

Shooting slugs with a shotgun with full choke?

Just put a little salt on them, they sort of melt. Good fun for the kids...

Slugs AREN'T THAT SMALL IN COMPARISON TO THE BARREL. Standard 12 gauge bore diameter is .729" -730" and full choke is generally considered to be 40 points {or .40"} of constiction which means a full choked barrel will measure .690" at the muzzle. Most Foster slugs currently on the market measure .728-.730" diameter {yes, I've measured them}. None of this really matters as the slugs will expand to fill the bore completely when several tons of gas pressure belts them in the rear at the instant of firing anyway, and the soft lead will also compress to pass harmlessly through even a full choke.
