Hey... im new to shotgunworld. Ok i just bought a model 1300 Defender 8-shot i got the pistol grip and full stock combo. Well my question is i see alot of talk about the Mossberg and the Remington as Tactical Shotguns but not much talk about the Winchester any ideas why ???

Does anybody have the full pistol grip stock on theirs if so how do you feel about it.

The Winchester 1300 Defender is a great shotgun for the money. It's not quite as smooth as the more expensive Mossberg 590 or Remington 870 Police, but it is a very good value.

The aftermarket doesn't seem to support the Win 1300 Defender as well as the others. (Including ourselves, but that will soon change!).

All in all, you have a great shotgun and probably paid half of what the more popular guns cost. Shoot it, enjoy it!

I have shot the pistol/stock combo on a Benelli M1. I really didn't like how heavier loads beat up my wrist. For me, the standard stock is the way to go on any shotgun, but that's just my personal preference, YMMV.

Sidearmor ... I appreciate your input. I would recommend the Winchester to anybody as of now so far no complaints. As far as the pistol/stock combo i might pick one up this weekend at the gun show cause i think they are pretty inexpensive. I'll post my opinion of it then. Later

One thing to look out for when buying a pistol grip, some of the cheaper models add a gap between the grip and the trigger guard. This may create too long of a reach for your trigger finger.

Sir,
If I may? I have a full pistol grip stock for my ole Win. 1200. Sidearmor is right about length of pull with the trigger in cheap ones. If you have small hands this is even more of a hassle. As of defense with the Winnies, You have a good buy. I'll try to find the web address for the stock.

Try checkin out this site: www.atigunstocks.com

They have quite a few aftermarket parts for the Win 1300. Now you can't buy straight through them, and I wouldn't recommend it if you could. Their MSRP is high. If you do a search on www.google.com for the Manufacturer and part name you'll find a dacentprice for the same part from a retailer.....

Hope that helps

Figured it out, there are 2 hidden screws in the back of the stock, then a bolt holding it on.

Looking at getting a Defender in a couple of days myself,
what do you think of the action, and the patterning of the shot in general? Have you had a chance to fire slugs through it? If so, how were your groups?

Thanks for any help!

I got a defender... I love it. I have not shot other shotguns though so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I think it's a great gun. I shot my defender for the first time the other day at an outdoor shooting range. I shot birdshot, 00 buck and rifled slugs. It performed very well. I'm in the process of turning it into a tactical shotgun. I just ordered a pistol grip forend and a buttstock & pistol grip combination.

I just got a winchester defender with a 20" barrle a little while back. Now i've had the barrel threaded and installed a full choke. i've also installed a ati over the top folder with a side saddle. Last night I added a surefire 636 tactical light system. It has a tac-star forend along with the tac-star magazine extension. I love this gun! its the newest member to my collection and its a blast. Took it to the range and set up several targets and ventilate them out to 40 yards with 00. to think i only payed $200 for the base gun i started to work with and its as nice as any other now...

olneb,

Unscrew the magazine tube cap and the barrel, forearm, and bolt carrier comes right off. Drive the pin out and the trigger group pops right out.

I have had two of these over the last 20 odd years - and both were crap. They would jam with inexpensive ammo, would not feed or extract low brass shells for skeet & target shooting.

The after market parts to modify are scarse.

For the money, buy a Reminton 870 or Mossberg 590A1.

Like cassius said I have an "Ol Win1200" but mine is the "riot shotgun" it has a 20" barrel 5 round cap -4 in the tube 1 in the chamber. I removeded the bayonet band assembly and removed the stocks to put on some Tacstar & ATI parts. I'm using the top folding stock, 8 shot extension supported by a mag clamp, forend pistol grips and a tac star light system that uses a pressure sensitive switch. I think it looks pretty mean but fully loaded it's a little heavy

I hate to disagree but 1300's are not "crap" in my humble opinion. I ran at least 50 rounds through mine today using different types of ammo from light target loads to slugs without a single malfunction or hiccup WHATSOEVER.

I have found that just about every sftermarket part that you could need is available for the 1300. They certainly are not scarce at all.

I personally love mine, but this is just ny opinion--Rob

I just bought a Winchester 1300 Defender with the 8 shot capacity, but without the pistol grip.

As far as handling goes, feel very comfortable with it and think I am going to enjoy shooting it. So far have only put about 150 rounds through it, but did run into one small problem. The gun came standard with a Day-glo front sight which managed to break free. Guess a small drop of epoxy will correct the problem, at least I hope so.

My only other shotgun is a 10 year old Benelli M1 Super 90 Tactical that does have the pistol grip/shoulder stock combo and I love it. Just felt the Winnie should be a conventional pump.

Safe shooting.

I have owned a 20 ga. 1300 Defender for years and been very happy with it; never had any problem with any type of factory load. I was so pleased with it that I went out and bought a Lady Defender, a 20 ga. pistol grip with an 18" barrel. I don't care for it because I find it uncomfortable to fire more than a few rounds at a time with the pistol grip, although it would certainly be fine as a home defense gun. I'm going to sell it and I could use some advice on where to advertise it. Feel free to drop me a note at reinehr@cox-internet.com if you would rather do that than post a reply on the forum.

I have a 1300 home defender model, I got it at a gunshow and it came with the standard stock, no pistol grip. I like it and have shot it quite a bit, but I had one question if anyone might be able to answer it. It has the stock short 18" barrel on it, and I was wondering if it was possible to put a longer one on it, maybe a 22" or 26" barrel? If so, Does winchester make them or would I have to go aftermarket? Would it require some type of kit to get it on, or would it just go right on? and any idea about pricing for something like this? Thanks to anyone who might know.

G'day,

I have a Winchester-made pistol grip addon for the Defender series of riotguns that I'd like to sell. I just recently added a folding stock/pistol grip combo to mine so I don't need this grip. Anyone interested in buying it drop me an email at apocalypse@fastmail.ca

I was plesantly surprised by a Win 1300 Defender which I got to shoot today. While it is a bit muzzle heavy with a full 7 round magazine full of slugs and buck shot, it hits where it is pointed, does not jam, and is quick to fire. It was a pleasant surprise that Win seemed to have figured out that the gun was not an upland game gun and stocked it to put slugs and shot to the same point of aim.

Off-hand at 25 yards a magzine of mixed foster and Beneke 2 3/4 slugs would stay well within 4 inches. The POI at 25 was about 5" higher than the point of aim...but consistant. At 50 yards, off hand, Beneke 1 1/8 oz slugs would stay with in 6 inches and at hit point of aim. All this from a cylinder bore, front bead sighted $200.00 shotgun. It is not a firearm that I'd like to be infront of.

WHIPJD@AOL.COM,

Woah, no need to yell. (typing in all caps on a post indicates that the user is yelling.) Now, about the bayonet. I would double check your local laws first. In some areas, a bayonet would make a shotgun illegal. other than that I would imagine that you could pick one up at a local gun show.

I am new to posting messages, so pardon the lack of bells and whistles. I have the FN Police shotgun which is almost identical to the Winchester 1300, even made by U.S. Repeating Arms. I picked it up for about $100 cheaper than the 1300. I have shot 3 gun matches, clays, and general fun. Put around 350 rounds through it including cheap value packs, high brass, even 3 inch slugs. Never a glitch, jam, or misfeed. I'm happy.

I've got a 1300, Recently added a TacStar Pistol grip and TacStar light setup with pressure pad switch on the pump.

I've put a variety of shells through it from BB to buckshot and I love the way it handles. From the shoulder and from the hip it "feels right".

Easy to field strip and clean, I love it!

I just found this forum today. I'm currently looking for a Winchester Defender for home defense but didn't find it on Winchester's website - have they discontinued it?

And I also looked at Mossberg's site and noticed their law enforcement model's - they looked even more like what I'm looking for - but can an individual purchase one?

I guess what I'm asking is for some advice on a good shotgun for home defense, what to look for, and a good company/source. I sold all of my guns years ago when in a pinch, and have regretted it ever since, since I had inherited all kinds of shotguns and rifles, and grew up hunting.

I would appreciate any help I can find.

Thank you,
John

Hi John,

Thank you for taking the time to post on Shotgunworld.

I'll answer the Mossberg specific question first. With the exception of the 590A1-Compact, anyone can own the LE models. The Compact can be bought but is a Class3 Weapon, meaning it requires a special Tax Stamp and ATF background check.

The models on the page are just 590 models.
http://www.mossberg.com/pcatalog/Specpurp.htm

As far as recommendations on shotguns. What's your price range? That's the real deciding factor. Decent HD guns range from $190-$3000. With a price range someone should be able to narrow it down quite a bit.

I have a mossberg 500A, a remington 870, and a winchester 1300 defender (all tactical models). I have to say that the mossberg feels cheap and loose, rattles like crazy, but ive never had a glitch with it. the remington and the winchester are much tighter actions and dont rattle. ( I keep the winchester under the bed). I would recommend any of them. If your looking to spend a little more I would look at the ithaca "homeland security" model. Not as much magazine capacity, but nothing beats an Ithaca's action.

I have owned the Winchester Model 1300 Defender about two years now. A fantastic shotgun. I have pistol grips fore and aft, and a six shot side shell carrier. The pistol grips make the gun very easy to control, and it is still easy to hold up and aim. This is a very impressive weapon and is my main home defense weapon. I load it with 00 Buck. I like to take it out to the desert and blast away at full one gallon water jugs with the Slugs and 00 Buck. Easy point and shoot, those bad guy water jugs just explode!

Great shotgun, loads of fun.

I own a Mossberg 590A1 and my brother a 1300 Defender. A 1300 18" barrel with pistol grip makes for a potent home security piece. Light and easy to handle with 3" capacity is all you could ask for. My 590A1 seems to operate smoother, but the bayonet mount and its added weight make it a better field weapon. We both put a lot of shells through our weapons and they both operate flawlessly.
