I recently acquired a new old stock 147E Merkel. Shot it the first time at sporting clays, 100 rounds. The action opens with a lot of difficulty. I was told that after a few hundred rounds it will loosen a bit.
I am wondering is I just open and close it a few hundred times while empty, would that loosen it?
Thanks

It took about two flats before my NOS Model 8, became easier to open, working the action will shorten the amount of time for break in. I would also recommend to grease the Knuckle and Hinge Pin areas, as the tight tolerances on a non or under lubricated Merkel can initiate a galling action.

Gene, thanks
I opened and closed my Merkel about 250 times. That loosened it some.
And I do have contact points lightly greased.

I have four O/U shotguns. The older the gun the easier it is to open. My oldest O/U a Browning Superposed, it falls all the way open when the switch is moved. My newer guns are a little stickier. Conclusion? The more the gun is opened and closed the easier it is to open.
