I have thought about getting a short 20 gauge shotgun to have for HD and to use for bunnies and possibly a dove or two. Thought I could put a slip on recoil pad to lengthen the stock should I need to. How is the quality of these Mavericks? Reliable? I realize they are not a $2,500 Browning. I just want something short, cheap and reliable. I'm not a high volume shooter. I'm looking at the youth model because it offers choke tubes. Something a typical HD shotgun lacks. I am getting older and have some health issues. A 20 is about all I can handle anymore.

OK, how about the Maverick 88's in general? Seems not many folks own the youth model. Or else I have not given it enough time yet.

Lardbutt,
I have the 88 in twenty gauge with the 26 inch barrel. I've had it for a number of years and put a lot of rounds through it. Never gave me a problem. I would recommend it to you. Tony

The Maverick has the same internal parts as the model 500. The safety and maybe the stock and fore end are different. Same barrels. I have owned over 50 Mossberg pumps from the old single actin bar models up to the newest. The Maverick is a solid gun. I should add that I buy and sell them as a hobby, that is why I've had so many. Also, I have had to do almost no repairs to any of them. The plastic safety is a non-issue, for example. If one drops shells from the magazine when the action works just bend the shell stop out SLIGHTLY. This is a proven design. They are also very easy to disassemble for cleaning after you have done it a couple times.

Is the stock size the only difference with the youth model? In other words, can I switch out any full sized mossberg 500 parts?

I believe so, yes. I put a shorter, aftermarket 12ga 500 stock on my 12ga Mav 88. I put the stock Mav88 stock on my 20ga 500 with success as well.
