Well. I guess I don’t know his trade secret but generally speaking if a finish is sprayed on you can go down in gloss but not up. A clear poly for example has stuff in it for lack of a better word to muddle up the finish. So if you spray a high gloss first you can go down in sheen because a satin is going to muddle up and make the sheen less glossy. But you can’t start at satin and go glossy from there because the satin finish has already put a layer of finish that is foggy and has lees shine.

When doing an oil rubbed finish you are basically polishing the surface so the more work you put into it the higher the gloss gets. So you can go up in sheen with that type of finish.

The short of it is make sure the guy doing your finish knows what you expect and he can tell you what the finish he is using is capable of.

He seems to be a pretty good gunsmith (https://www.admgun.com/)

Anyway, I made certain to ask him to stop refinishing at a point where we could decide which way to go.

Andrew(Angry Leprechaun)is the real deal, and any concerns of his work are unwarranted. Personally for my taste and the guns I work on satin or low gloss is where I stay.
